I have done Autobahn, Gingerman, Grattan, VIR, Seibring, Mid Ohio & Putnan. Oh, and Sears Point (I guess that's Infinion now). That's where I learned to drive, my Dad dropped me off when I was 16 at Bonderaunt for the week and let them teach me how to drive. :biggrin:

Well, now that Bluegrass is opening in my backyard (15 miles from my driveway) I don't think I will be road tripping this year. Autbahn is a 6 hr drive. I found it to be a fun track, but not really worth the drive for me. If you want to see how a track is suppose to be run, make a trip down to Barber in AL. That track is really First Class. It is a great track, the grounds are landscaped beautifully and the facilities are first class. The Museum is pretty nice too.

Mid Ohio is a fun track and Putnam, like Gingerman is a great "push it hard" track as there is plenty of run off everywhere. Although last year, we had a Cayman S exit off backwards the inside of turn 4 and dig into soft ground and roll 6 times. Wasn't pretty.

NASA was great until 2007. There are WAY too many people now and it is geared more for the racers. The HPDEs are there only to subsidize the racing now and way too many rules for advanced groups. I toyed with the idea of picking up an Integra Type R to race, but I didn't have the time. Now I have the time but after my downgrade, I don't have the money. :(

SCCA has become the same way. The spring SCCA Mid Ohio event had close to 200 people and was a total cluster. I will never instruct at another SCCA event again. I only did two NASA events last year compared to 14 PCA events and a few 1010ths events (which are setup more like MVP - small numbers, fewer rules and more open track time).

BTW: As good as a track car the NSX makes, it can't keep up with the big boys with torque.

Central Indian Region PCA is going to do their Spring Fling at Bluegrass this year instead of Putnam. April 12-13 I think it is. Registration open in Feb.

Also 1010ths Motorsports is going to do 10 events at Bluegrass. 1010ths also has some great instructors including Danny Popp. If you don't know about Danny, he is probably the #1 Corvette guy in the US. Including setting the new lap record last fall when we were out at Putnam of 1:10.1.
For reference, Ron Fellows piloted the Goodrich C5-R around in 1:15 and the track record is 52.91 SEC., set by Roberto Gonzalez in an Indy Car.

Here is a nice video of Danny at Mid Ohio for the 2008 Nationals Qualifying Race. Starting in the back, he passes quite a few cars on the way to the front. He truly is an amazingly talented driver, great instructor and all around nice guy.

I cant do timed events or any real racing because insurance wont cover me then. Do PCA and 1010th time or race? Doesnt 1010ths go all out? Im looking to go balls out and have fun just like everyone else, but Im not gonna take the chance of being on the hook for 200k + liability because me or someone else makes a mistake.
I have no clue what I ran at Putnam, but I do know they were timing us up in the tower, just not telling us for the insurance reasons.
 
No both are HPDEs and neither do timing. Although you are allowed to have your own in car lap timer/data logging.

Both CIRPCA and 1010ths are very well run and very car/driver safe.
CIRCPA requires instructors for everyone until "signed off" and no passengers except instructors. Nice thing about 1010ths is if they signed the waiver and have a Snell 2000+ helmet, you can take anyone you want as a passenger (after Instructor signs you off that is).

1010ths is a little more relaxed with rules (especially for the advanced group) but we run much smaller groups. We have everything from Novice first timers to the top of the food chain... Danny (who serves as chief instructor).

Both are good groups to run with, with safety first and fun second. Egos are fine in the paddock, but better be checked before pitting out.

BTW: I saw the video of your back road adventures and I am not going to do any lecturing, but you know that Mini van moms and people pulling out of driveways are a much bigger risk than lapping on a track. I have never seen anyone die at the track, but damn if you T-bone someone doing 80 mph it doesn't matter if your insurance covers you or not.

You can only go so fast on the street anyways, and you have no control of what others do on the street :(

one more thing about 1010ths. I was told alot of Viper guys goto that, and Ive never heard anything good with Viper guys at the track. They usually have the biggest ego, are the most dangerous, and are the onea that put their cars into the walls.....and anyone close by. Whats you opinion on that?

No, there haven't been any Viper guys that have run with us. Alot of Corvettes though, because Bill Neal who runs it has a Z06 and C6. A mix of alot of other cars, from Audi R8 to Subie STIs and everything in between. We really haven't had ANY problems with any one yet. They would be black flagged and pulled pretty quick though.

The problem with the Vipers and I have seen a few problems elsewhere with them (Norwood Shelby Club @ Authbahn, Viper Club @ Putnam, etc.) is as Jermey Clarkson from Top Gear said, "the car has miles and miles of grip and then when it finally does let go, it kills you!" The car has so much torque down low, like the early 911 Turbo, that it is very unforgiving. The new Viper, even though it's up to 600hp is suppose to be much more docile because they moved the torque band much higher and it's much more linear in the delivery.

If I had a Viper, the first thing I would do is spend lots and lots of time on the skippad, tossing it around, drifting it and finding out how to handle that rear end swinging around - because with the Viper the back end will be swinging around eventually. The problem with novices is they can drive fast, but when that back end comes around they can't control it and now they are just along for the ride.

Last time I was out at Putnam with 1010ths, there was a guy running this Bob Tullis Jag IMSA car. One of a kind, 550 hp. I don't think you have anything to worry about others running into you. Same as other clubs, point by to pass and only on the straights for the novices. If you are patient to pass and don't tailgate right up someone's ass, you will never have a problem even if the person in front of you does something really stupid. The key is to get right up behind the person so he knows you are there and then drop back a bit and wait patiently. Occasionally, you will get the guy in the 911 GT3 RS or Z06, etc who you are much faster than, but his ego doesn't want to let the 290hp NSX by. Sticking you noise up his ass isn't going to change that, it will only make him push himself harder and make a mistake... sit back and wait or pit in and and back out.

As an instructor, I occasionally like to go out in the novice and intermediate groups and leap frog from person to person, follow a bit and make sure they are doing a good job of letting people by. If they are not, we'll pull them in and give him the sportsmanship talk.

I know I am late to the thread. But, you might want to look into taking the backroads from Louisville, over to Labrot and Graham Distillery, which is now called the Woodford Reserve distillery. It is on the way to Lexington, they have better backroads around there then near Bardstown (which has a lot of state troopers btw), and the tour of the distillery is better than that of Maker's Mark.

Plus, you are close to Lexington. So, you can take even more backroads if you head out to Lexington from there.

If you start up in Indy, I would recommend stopping at the Horseshoe in Southern Indiana. It used to be a Ceasars, and it much better than Belterra. Plus it is about 15 minutes from downtown Louisville.

Then you could always head to downtown Louisville, and have a tour of the Louisville Slugger Museum. It is a pretty neat and fun tour. You can even get a personalized bat, aka NSX protector, there.

Just some ideas. I lived in LVL for 26 years, so let me know if you have any questions about the area.

And yes LVL Catholic girls put out! :biggrin:

Yeah, I have a place to crash. My parents still live in LVL. Hopefully I will be able to attend. I would say that my attendance in tentative, as I have a 4.5 month old boy. So, if my wife will let me have a pass, then I would love to drive up.

They are called Casinos. I am not sure what casions are. :tongue: It sounds like this is both a drive and a field trip :)

However, I agree that stopping at a Casino in the middle is a bad idea because it breaks up the trip. The route should be scheduled to where you hit up a casino in the evening. Have dinner there, and then those that want to gamble can go onboard. Those that are ready to go home, can well, go home.

Woodford on the rocks is the best summer sipper imo. A tour of Woodford would be :cool:.
You know we roll 20 deep balla stylz at the casinos. The NSXs and all other Hondas that come will be valet parked front door (uber balla stylz).:biggrin:

Italian tractors will have to sit in the garage where they belong.:tongue:
