Obviously this guy has a severe addiction, maybe several. He's certainly no fool but the only one responsible for this sorry state of affairs is him.
If there's any fool in this story it's the casino that extended him 14 million in credit. I'm not sure how this works but the way I see it either he amassed 14 million in credit over time or the casino extended it towards the end.
If they extended it over time wouldn't the casino require him to square up every so often before he could continue to gamble? And if they gave it to him at the end they are just idiots. So he drops 127 million of his own money and then asks the casino for 14 million unsecured? Who made the decision on that one?
Besides, the last place I'd want someone who owes me 14 million is in jail. I might get some or all of that money back if he goes home and runs his company.
EDIT: I see that he sold his company...but he's probably a very good executive and ostensibly has no earning power in jail.
