radar detectors--------can't decide which one

But it's rather insensitive - and even rude and elitist - to assume, as you do, that this board consists of a lot of people who don't own NSX's and that the discussion should be based on the needs of those people rather than NSX owners.

So then you are saying that those of us who don't own an NSX dont belong here, and that our opinions do not matter if we don't own the car. I think my assumption that you are an elitist is right on.

And by the way, bolding words all over the place is annoying

The Valentine One is the radar detector to buy. No question about it in my mind. Yes, it is a lot of money to spend, but look at this way - (I don't recall the respective prices right off-hand so please bear with my examples) - if the Passport is $300 and the V-1 is $400, assuming you have narrowed your choice to those two, you have already committed to spending $300. The only question is whether or not to spend the additional $100; it's almost a sunk cost kind of analysis. I, too, considered going with a less expensive model, but decided the annoyance of spending an additional $100 would be considerably less than the regret of having potentially wasted $300. I hope that makes sense.

NetVIper, Nsxtasy sometimes comes across a shade more harshly than he intends.
But you DID say the "a hundred dollars is alot of money for those of us who don't have the money etc etc". He's not being elitist or impolite in any way. It may come across that way but I don't believe it was his intention.

Fact of the matter is that this is an NSX board. Some people here own NSX's some don't. It would make sense that most of the advice/opinions made here would be more geared toward an NSX owner than a Geo Metro owner. Or a Civic owner or whatever. Its not THAT big of a deal. Everyone is welcome here.

For example. Comptech Headers are 1799.00 last I checked. Take that price to a Mustang board and people would scream bloody murder. Here people look at that and say "well, its a bit spendy but not out of the ballpark, considering Mugen sells theirs for 4000 dollars.

Its all a mater of perspective. So, keep everything in perspective, and everyone be nice to each other.

I have owned my Valentine 1 for several years. Its performance has been top-notch, having saved my butt numerous times. That being said, no matter how good a radar detector is, it does not make you immune to instant-on radar, vascar, and other techniques, but it is extremely valuable nonetheless.

I have been very happy with my Valentine 1. I find the directional arrows very useful. I also value their policy of making upgrades available when they improve the technology.

Their customer service has been top notch. I have had to order replacement suction cups a couple of times; their little loops where the removal bar attaches eventually rip. One time, when I called to order replacements, Mike Valentine himself answered the phone! Turns out he does that to hear what customers have to say about the company and its products.

I realize that there are a couple of other detectors now on the market that have done well in some of these tests. I also feel that the technology changes, and that these independent tests are valuable. But I have been so happy with my Valentine 1, that if I had to buy another detector, I would get another Valentine 1 based on my overall ownership experience, regardless of any difference in price.

Sounds like the V1 is it especially since I can connect it to the fuse box and hide the wire. Again, my question didn't infer whether I save money buying a detector but rather the aesthetics of it. I just don't like a cord dangling down the middle of the cockpit. Has anyone with a V1 attached it to the rear glass?

You can buy the remote display option for the Valentine 1, and/or permanently route the wiring under the interior trim, to avoid the dangling cords. Installation tips are in the you-know-what here.

Sorry to jump in here so late. Here's my take. I think the V1 is the best for detecting with the best features. However if I undertand your concern about being hidden.

I have a K40 with front and rear detectors that are complety hidden. In fact when I bought the car from the dealer they didn't even know the detector was installed by the original owner. I found it by looking at the fuse box. It took put the car on the lift to find where the sensors hidden in the bumbers.
There are 2 leds that are embedded into the dash which indicate front vs. rear. That's about all anyone would ever see. They'd have to know what they were.

So the fundamental questions are how much detection is needed and how well do you want the detector hidden?

So far it's saved my a$$ several times. I can tell you from personal experience I picked up a state patrol 2 miles away on a flat hwy. I was in triple digits and let off the pedal on the first alert. On the 2nd I hit the binders real hard. At that speed 2 miles goes by pretty quick. Last night I picked up a patrol sitting in a blind spot around corner off of an over pass with no bldgs to bounce the signal. My K40 still picked him up. So from my perspective the K40 is performing very well for me. Maybe it's dated and not very popular but works for me.

Would I like the V1? Yes if I could make it as well hidden as my K40. I'm not sure how it is in Canada but in Oregon if they see it I can guarantee you'll wish they never found it.

If you want pictures of how mine was installed let me know. Maybe Bill will post them for me.

P.S. nsxtasy is alright, he's just gets this way when he hasn't been to the track enough!

A lot! I shift from 2nd to 3rd at 82mph. I'm not sure of the speed limit on your highways but here's it 65 changing to 70 soon. Going 10 to 15 over is pretty common and really almost staying with the flow of traffic in many areas you have to drive over. I can pick up a patrol at that speed by sensing the chg in traffic pattern. So my detector only validates what I've kind of figured out already.

It's where there's no traffic that I get concerned and trust my detector a whole lot. Mostly on country roads in the wine country. If it goes off there then I'm on the binders big time!

do any of you trust your radar detectors enough to set your cruise control at 90mph+
?

No. It's not that I don't trust my radar detector. It's that I know that I can still get caught by instant-on radar or laser.

If there's someone up ahead of me going 90+ I sometimes follow along behind. But I don't want to be the one out in front going 90+.

I have driven the Monroe to Dallas drive 5-6 times and I usually stay between 80-85. But, even at that speed, I am worried about getting a ticket. Especially if I am alone on the road. That said, I haven't ever got a ticket, but the detector has saved my butt quite a few times. I had a porsche blow by me at 100+. I stayed with him for a bit before I chickened out and slowed back down.

I met a guy here with a 450HP 300zx that said he used to set his cruise at 120 MPH for the ride to Dallas. He has a jammer and detector, but that sounds a little unbelievable.

NSXtasy. I think I owe you an apology. You are right, this board is for NSX owners. My views on money etc are really not relevant to the majority of users here. Hopefully, in the near future, I will be able to join the club and get my own NSX. No hard feelings.

I would recommend the val 1 over anything! once you get used to it its awesome. The directional arrows and the counter really help out alot. There's a highway near my house that i always drive on that has 2 of those speed alert radars one after the other.
my val 1 always reads 2 when i go by.usually around 80-85 mph but the other day it read 3 so of course i slowed down. the sneaky cop was hiding a little passed them.without the counter i would have been BUSTED!!
To me the VAL 1 radar detector is selling at a discount!!
good luck

Before I purchase a V1, it seems to me that this model has been around for quite a few years. I know there are updates available for older models but don't you think that Valentine would come out with a new model that will again leapfrog the competition? Because in the tests, it now ranks below the new Escort and Bel (Radartest.com).
