Synchro Mesh vs new honda White cap

looking for opinions from those whom have used both the newest variant of the honda MTF and the famous GM synchromesh friction modified + synchromesh cocktail. I can say that synchromesh worked wonders in my 240sx, and my supra, and my corvette, but I am ultra picky about what goes into the NSX so I would appreciate feedback. (yes I searched, but it didnt seem as though there were any new threads on this in the past year).

I ONLY use the Cocktail in mine.
after I switched I will never go back.
honda makes the best cars but I used the whitecap when I first got my NSX then swapped to see the difference I liked it better

the gears feel smooth like butter.

try it if you dont like it or cant feel the difference then switch back to the whitecap.

its not gonna hurt.

RYU is a OEM HONDA only kinda guy like me except this one tiny thing LOL

Agree with Shawn. It does make it shift much better. I had it in my S2k and it was a noticeable difference. However, on the flip side...it may render your LSD less functional with unknown long term effects. For a street only car I may try the Synchromesh in my NSX someday.

How do you mix this cocktail? I i remember correctly on one of the threads it says 1 part Honda MTF + 2 parts GM Syncrhomesh? Also, I am guessing you can pick up the GM syncrhomesh at a GM dealer? Thanks!

gmpartsdirect.com if you want to save money. IIRC, it is ~10-19 a QT at the dealership depending upon their markup. The cocktail ill be using is 2 qts FM and 1 qt reg synchromesh

first unbolt the top bolt you do this cuz some people have taken the bottom drain out first and cant get the top off then they are stuck with a car that they cant put oil in inless the car it turned upside down LOL

remove top fill bolt.
then remove bottom drain bolt.

drain.

re-install bottom bolt.

fill first the 2 bottles of GM syncromesh Friction modified in the tran
then use the last bottle of gm sycromesh non modified
you will only use about 3/4 of the last bottle

put the top bolt back in and go drive it.
you will instantly feel how the trans shifts better.

this is what I do.

I just had my 6-speed converted to dual input shaft got the car back last night and it has honda MTF in it Uggh doesnt feel the same but I cant change it to modifed yet for a few weeks put some miles on the the new clutch first.

if you dont like it just swap back its that easy.

but I wouldnt use modified and honda MTF I would just use all GM bottles.

not sure the effects of another brand with the GM stuff.

goodluck report back

my mechanic, who is an nsx specialist with over 20 years experience on nsx's
,uses straight gm synchromesh,no fm.he likes it more than honda white cap.

my car is fairly low mileage, about 38k,and shifts perfectly.i have the impression he saves the friction modifier for older trans that are starting to shift rough, but that's just my speculation.i know he recommends synchromesh highly.

shawn or anyone, any thoughts on using straight synchromesh for lower mileage transmissions, and the cocktail for ones starting to show signs of wear?

Nothing against Amsoil. But its more expensive and doesn't have the same rave reviews
When it comes down to your trans, the cost of oil should'nt be an issue. Im not sure about the rave reviews but I've personally used straight Honda fluid and also the mixed cocktail. Both worked but neither worked as well as Amsoil. Im not telling you what to buy, Im just telling you whats best.:biggrin: You really can't go wrong with any of the choices here.

I'd like to chime in with this tidbit in case someone is thinking about it: DO NOT use Red Line MTL. I love Red Line oil in general (I use their 5w30 in the NSX, and their 0w20 + CVT fluid in my Civic Hybrid), but their MTL just is not a good match in the NSX transmission.

What's honda white cap?
If I go to Acura and ask them to change the transmission fluid, is that what they use?

7 years ago when I got my NSX, high speed shifts into 3rd were met with some gear gnashing. I changed over to the GM syncro cocktail. After about 2000 miles, no more gear issues. Now with about 12000 more miles on the car, and going turbo, no gear or shifting issues. Can't say that about white cap.

I dont experiment on my NSX

but after reading about other NSX owners were putting in my car I tried it.
the original cocktail.

I dont know why the original cocktail req. 2 qt modified and 1 non

I didnt try all modifed someone in a thread said it was to thick
and that the 3rd bottle of non helps dilute it a little, so it not as thick

as for high miles vs newer after i tried it in my 92 I then put it into my 04
as I dont think it would hurt anything. and my 04 shifts just like my 92
smooth and between gear you dont feel that bump everyone knows what I am talking about that small grab between shifts the only way I can describe it is a bump if I didnt say anything you prob would never feel it but all the NSX's I have driven have the same thing
the bump I am talking about is what I am dealing with right now since getting my dual input shaftinstalled a few days ago in it has Honda White Cap
Mech told me to wait about a week before you switch it out to the modifed

both have 6-speed installed.

I then went and did the coctail in every car I own. its that good.
and I own all honda's/Acura's .

I think honda dealer carry the gm sycromesh but not the modified you need to find 2 bottles of modified and just go ahead and buy the other bottle, Im sure they will do this for you at the dealer

I did not think that the early NSXs had a limited slip differential.

Or you could just use this without mixing.
http://www.amsoil.com/storefront/mtf.aspx

Works excellent for me. It is designed for Honda BTW.

Doesn't it say at the bottom of the page "Not for use in engines, hypoid rear axles, limited-slip or wet-clutch applications"

I just put in some fresh Honda white cap into mine... we'll see if I can tell a difference. The previous owner replaced the clutch and put something in it but I'm not sure what... I think in a couple of years time if I still have some issues grinding into 3rd gear at high RPM like kookoo maybe I'll try the cocktail out and see if it fixes the problem.

Well I'd better check into this. Good catch. I've had it in the trans. a couple years with no issues. I change the trans oil every 2 years anyway so nows a good time to see. Thanks for posting this.

I guess I need to add this to my tranny shopping list
