ok, i just got a valentine one from a friend of mine. He said I can call in the Serial #...its legit and has been upgraded with the most recent chip or something like that

anyways, I have a few questions...it didn't come with a users manual.

Now, I plugged it in and it is constantly pointing some direction with the arrow things and is ALWAYS making this obnoxious humming noise, and the bogey counter is usually showing 1, 2, 3 or 4...and its not always on one, so it can't be picking osmething up.

Is this humming normal?? I turned the volume alway the up and the little tab under the volume all the way down and the humming is minimal and every once in a while it gives a quick "beep beep" and points somewhere, but its still reading "full-strength" and pointing in some direction, no matter what.

I think I might have to send it back to V1, but I'm not sure yet...any help is appreciated! Thanks

Go to Valentine 1's site for the manual. They have a PDF version you can download under the "More Info" page. Their phone number is listed at the bottom of each page on the site, but you'll have to wait until Monday for their support department to open.

It sounds like something is wrong with your detector.

sounds like something is wrong with it.
Mine doesn't make any sort of humming sound. The little tab by the volume knob u mentioned is the volume adjustment for the unit in muted mode. You put it in mute mode by pressing in on the regular volume knob. It will automatically come out of mute mode when there are no more radar warnings for a set period fo time.

You can certainly have V1's updated. If it has been, then that is a good thing.

The humming noise you are talking about is weird. Mine doesn't do that.

As for the constant full strength readings are also quite strange, but there COULD be something giving off electronic noise that your detector is picking up (like another radar detector, strong CBs on 18 wheelers, etc).

I'd do a little troubleshooting. Take the v1 down off the window, leave it plugged in and slowly spin it around 360 degrees. If it tells you a constant thread is always at the same 'arrow' then something is definitely wrong.

Nothing in the my NSX or other car gives off any interference and my gut feel says you have a bum detector.

I hope you get it sorted out, I love my V1.

Call Valentine Research on Monday and talk to them about it. They'll give you good advice. Their customer service is top notch.

Before you do, though, you might want to check and see what upgrades are available for your unit. You can do this by entering the serial number on their website here. This way, you'll know ahead of time whether it's worth spending the money for the upgrade too, or just the repair (assuming there is a difference in price).

EDIT: I see you mention that the unit has just been upgraded. Please note that Valentine provides a one-year warranty on all upgraded units.

Thanks for all the help guys. After I posted, I did some searching and found the user manual online and it helped alot.

I found out that it is permanently picking up something on X-band and that the humming is the X-band going off. I put it on "All bogey" mode, Logic and the other Auto Logic mode and nothing.

I guess I'll just have to call them on monday.

I typed in my serial # and it says there is an upgrade but it says that its not that important of an upgrade basically...its $150 though!

Or, if you want the best detector on the market - one with the farthest range, one that can be upgraded as technology improves, one that provides an indicator of the direction the signal is coming from - keep the Valentine 1, and thank your friend for it.

The Valentine 1 costs $399. The remote display unit (if you want a semi-permanent installation) is extra.

The laser jammers are currently being discussed in this topic.

Do yourself a favor and get an Escort 8500.

I had an 8500 for one week. It sucked. I am now a loyal V1 user (see other thread).

With the V1, it saved me three times today!! The 8500 failed me 4 days after I bought with normal Ka band (not even POP or instant on). Thank God I wasn't speeding, but I returned it, got my full $250 and bought a Valentine 1 a month later.

FYI, it's not cheap to upgrade the valentine one. In fact, very expensive!
It's a lot less expensive than buying a new one - usually half the price or less. And what you get is basically a swap for a brand new unit at that reduced price, including a full one-year warranty, just like all new units.

Yep, an Escort 8500 is guaranteed to make you miss your V1 even more as you are getting pulled over and cursing your 8500.... :D

Any one wants to buy escort 8500? only $100. my brother just bought a V1 after we went on a road trip on separate car. I use V1 and he's got Escort 8500. On every cop encounter, my V1 pick it up way before he saw the cops. he was so impressed that he end up just watch my brake lights for Bogey signals. This in not a story. We didn't know which one will be better, and I had hoped that V1 will be. so this is the real world testing. I am glad V1 is better because my wife will kill me for spending so much on a radar detector if it was not the best. Pm me if you are interested in my brother's escort.
