1000HP K20 NSX Build-Street Car

I joined NSX Prime some time ago and just lurked as many people do….Eventually after building many different cars over the years and even working for a race shop long ago, I decided I had to have a white NSX…

In 2011 I found the PERFECT car for me, or so I thought. A 1993 White NSX that seemed to be taken care of better than any I could find. It had COMPTECH everything! Looked like it was a shop car: Hi Boost Kit for Comptech Supercharger, comptech headers, comptech final drive, AEM, injectors, Gruppe M Gauge Cluster, Type R wheels, and some other parts in the listing. I bought the car sight unseen from California after speaking with the seller who apparently was an older gentleman who bought it with his son and just didn’t drive it. It ships to me in enclosed transported to not have it chance of any damage. I was so excited to finally get another manual Honda that I can just jump in and rip on! I wanted nothing crazy, just some plain fun as I had many other cars with HP close to the 4 digit (1000HP) mark already.

First day of me getting the car, off to a bad start to say the least. The transporter doesn’t call me and doesn’t drop the car off close to my house but instead car down the road so I wouldn’t see him unload it and onto a grassy field area. I get their and the car is off and paperwork hanging in his hand ready to sign. I go over the car and note tons of little damage, paint marks, scratches, chips, windshield heavy scratches, all kinds of stuff on the report and I was pissed! I mean I just spent $2,000 to ship a car so it doesn’t get messed up, I might as well have just threw it on cheap fly by night guy for a fraction of that $. I sign the receipt and jump in my new NSX and see what its all about. I was pretty excited and careful to learn what I had actually just bought as I’ve never even driven one, just rode in one a couple times.

I drove it to the store a couple times to get groceries and back home, maybe 10 miles. I decide its idling a little rough and the seller doesn’t really know much about cars, and I can’t get his middle age son on the phone. I pull off the intake filter and see some oil coming out and smoke out of the valve cover. I decide to pull the plugs immediately. After climbing on top of the motor and car to pull the coil packs and plugs, I realized this car sucks to work on with all the stuff going on in the back area. Each plug I lay out and examine and they look rich but ok, THEN I pull one out soaked with oil, oh no!!!! I do a compression test and sure enough every cylinder is fine except one of them, my heart was sad but I wasn’t discouraged that much yet.

I then go on nsxprime and start researching my options and if it made sense to build a motor C30a or buy a used one, or something else…I then see STMPO with a K20a powered Track car. Definitely not a street car and in 100 pieces and not even finished really but it was a good idea! At this time I had a Civic with a K20A turbo setup making around 1000HP to the flywheel and was crazy on anything besides the ¼ track because of the limited tire size you can run. I start to talk with Ross at STMPO, we exchanged emails and messages for about 2 weeks and then all of a sudden he is gone from everywhere, email, nsxprime, just poof gone. He gave me some ideas and I decided that even though he never made a car that drove on the road with a windshield, I could do something similar but as a normal car with AIR CONDITION and a radio.

I have a lot of tools and a lift at the house so I decided to pull the drivetrain myself the next day. I have no instructions and I’m having a good old time with a buddy just pulling stuff apart. After a while, I realize this car sucks even more and to pull stuff apart, it’s a ton of parts and more work than I expected. I would never do this again as I’m far too slow at doing mechanic work even though I can get most things done.

Skip a little more down the road, I sell off anything that seems normal in the car and definitely never going back to stock again. I send it out to a local shop in South Florida to make some serious modifications as STMPO never emailed me back let alone a motor mount kit I wanted to buy. There was so much work involved with making this swap work, its not even worth it unless the car is wrecked or broken, I should have just fixed the motor and kept it normal. Too late to go back, must press on.

Many years later it gets fitted with some work form 1 shop, then goes to another shop for more details to get done, it doesn’t get done, then it goes and sits for a long time, then it goes to a shop in Miami where they have many K20 powered race cars going in the 8’s in the ¼ mile. They eventually come through with the missing unicorn pieces I needed! Car leaves there with the drivetrain blazing out about 1000HP to the flywheel and running like a champ.
Now I am with a running car from 2011 to 2016 with maybe 10 miles on the car since I bought it. I send it off to finish the interior with 1 shot, my buddy redoes everything on the inside AMAZINGLY.

I have the car at home and working on finishing the exterior front end conversion and some more suspension work before I drive it too much. I’ll be posting pictures in the coming posts. For now, here are some pictures from the beginning of the project.

Thank you Prime for the inspiration.

Never on prime, had a thread more badly needed a video!

And what's the name of that transport company so I never have to use them.

Part 2

Sold off a lot of the NSX parts and started building the K20 motor. I made a mistake but using the wrong shop along the way to build the motor and do a lot of the fabrication work. They did some good fab work but the details were just never really developed until stuff was done. A lot of the design was never fully taken on by them, basically rushed and many things had to be redone. Lots of $ to get it done right.

Keep in mind these pictures had many parts change so the final product is different than during the build.

TD Autowerks in Miami, FL eventually came in and finished the car the right way!

Skipping the boring parts about all the mishaps and set backs with the car had due to myself as well as others I initially asked to work on the car and weren't familiar enough with the platforms. I won't mention some of the help I got in the beginning as it was mixed results but I finally got the NSX running with the help from many.

I would mention that K-Tuned.com was critical very gracious in helping me source some parts from them and hiring Damian at TD AutoWerks who also owns BelakIndustries.com was the missing link in wrapping up the project . Rywire designed the engine wiring harness that started the journey but required lots of custom parts as well as a OEM NSX harness and a OEM RSX wiring harness to make it work.

There were a couple ideas I had in mind with the car that I had to follow:

1-Be as lightweight as possible without making it a true racecar
2-Be a street car with full interior, radio, air condition, something my girlfriend would ride in with me.
3-Be very competitive in terms of a 4 cylinder Honda Turbo setup
4-Keep the fun enjoyment of a gokart that the NSX has

I'm still working on swapping out a lot of the stainless lines for light weight E85 rated fuel lines, swapping out some of the parts to match the engine bay better, suspension tuning, and of course the downforce 2002+ NSX body parts once I get them.

Most of the interior pictures from tearing it all down and leaving most of what I would call a "street car" to keep it functional. I did get rid of:

-SRS airbag system
-Factory ash tray and cigarette lighter
-All the OEM stereo pieces from some more modern components
-Lots of OEM computers that I no longer were using: Traction control, electronic power steering, SRS ECU

Epic build thread........years in the making!

Now this is a swap I can get behind!

Incredible assortment of parts.

Thanks guys! NSX platform is definitely something I appreciate and I had to make a good dream out of a bad situation when I got the car. I'm hoping to make the NSXPO in Orlando this year. Probably the way it is now, I may be able to get farther in the build but I hope to at least enjoy it this year.

This looks great! Something many of us can only dream of doing. I hope that I'm not being too inappropriate in asking, but how much are you expecting all of these modifications to cost?

I have a spreadsheet tracking all of the costs and the sales off the stock NSX parts which were way higher than I ever expected. Lets just say when the NSX is done the cost will be similar to my Ferrari 360 Challenge Street car which most people would rather own. I'm excited to enjoy this car and see how far I can take it.

2002+ conversion coming soon, waiting on parts

I drove the car today for a little and it was a pleasure besides it was so hot in FL today. The car really handled well and it got me thinking that I have a lot of suspension parts to put on, and I need to remove some ore uses less junk.

So I decided to put the car on the lift and do some more work....The perfect 50/50 corner balance is without me dong ANYTHING, lol. I'm removing ABS and some more parts soon the weight you see, will go down.

Weighed today with almost full tank of e85 (100lbs of fuel easily)= 2658lbs
My goal is to get to 2550lbs with a full gas tank

Great build! Is there any weight savings with this engine/trans setup?
/Marcus

I believe there is probably several hundred pounds difference besides the fact the motor is light years better than the old school belt driven v6 when it comes to modifying it. I added a lot of weight back with the over built intercooler up front, ice box in the back, pumps, turbo, etc.

New updates today:

Removed ABS

Removed Cruise control

Installed ABS delete kit from pole to flag racing with a Tilton propotional valve

Installing some more lighter weight fuel lines to match the car

Installing: Quaife Honda K-series Sequential transmission with all the bells and whistles.
Comes with gear sensor, transmission temperature sensor, shorter shift cables and the lastest quaife shifter. They just started making this VERSION about 1 month ago and it was changed so the mid engine transplants can have the cables routed shorter with a different gear selector, very trick. A couple guys have ran OVER 1000HP through it without breaking the transmission so I'm excited.

Installing Quaife ATB LSD

Installed some Mickey Thompson 285/40/18 Drag Radials on some Enkei 18x10.5 wheels and shaved the wheels a couple mm's to bring the offset in a tiny bit.

Will probably be a little while until these parts are installed and tuned completely.

This build is nuts. Can't wait to see how many hearts this car breaks.

I like this thread. It does however take away some pride from the original NSX power plant as to kicking ass in everything in it's class. But it is very well thought out. Still though, at the end of the day, it is no longer an NSX. Would I do all this work to an NSX platform, NO. But I cannot bypass respect to those who do. Very well done... Looking forward to more updates.

I would take that battery tender device off the Shorai battery ASAP. you need to use the Shorai brand battery charger specifically designed for their batteries. Several people have killed their batteries prematurely doing what you're doing....

Nice, my favorite build so far when it comes to power plant/drivetrain build, pure awesomeness filled with high quality parts! Great job.
