What a crazy weekend. The track conditions were worse than any time attack i've been to at Buttonwillow. I would guess the track conditions were anywhere from 0.5-1.5 seconds slower depending on the session due to the heavy winds kicking up dirt onto the track and the excessive offs. There were over 60 street-class cars competing, some of them need a little more seat time to be able to keep their cars on the track.

This weekend saw some track records fall (despite the poor track conditions):

Modified FWD: perviously held by the Sports Car Motion EG Civic (Tim K.) - 1:55.948

1:55.809 - Sports Car Motion EG Civic (Tim K.)

Street FWD
: previously held by the Evasive Civic SI (Mike C.) - 2:03.557

2:00.552 - Mazdaspeed/Playstation/Bergenholtz Racing Mazda 3 (Dino).

Unlimited RWD:
previously held by C-West/BC S2000 (my buddy Tyler McQuarrie) - 1:46.893

1:45.516
- FX Motorsports Development/Cricket Wireless/Yokohama Tire/KW Suspension NSX (Billy Johnson).

This is also the fastest US-built Time Attack car, with only 2 Japanese-built cars that are faster (Tomei/Cusco STI - 1:44.3 and HKS EVO - 1:43.5).

With 3 overall wins and track records under their belt (Laguna Seca, Long Beach, Buttonwillow), the FX Motorsports Development NSX is the fastest time attack car in the USA.

Our Story:

I'd like to thank all of our sponsors for making all of this possible:

FX Motorsports Development - Team
Factor-X Racing - Motor builder
Cricket Wireless - Title Sponsor
Yokohama Tire - Tire Sponsor with AWESOME A005 racing slicks
NEO Synthetics - The best oils out there.
KW Suspension - 3way adjustable race dampers
Brian Crower - Engine internal (crank) supplier
Darton International - Sleeve supplier
Uehara Motowerks - Shop space
Downforce.biz - Aero
RC Fuel Injectors - Fuel Injectors
BREMBO - F50/Lotus brake calipers and 2pc rotors
Performance Friction - Brake pads. The infamous: PFC 01 Compound
FIX & STACK Restaraunt in Las Vegas - Food/Support
GoPro Motorsports Hero - For capturing the event
Back in Balance Chiropractic - Keeping the team/driver in optimum condition
Autovation - Fastest brake pedals around

Our team (FXMD) has been working on this car for months, pulling all-nighters to get it finished in time. The NSX platform has a lot of shortcomings in the drivetrain. Since we are the fastest NSX generating more grip than any other car, we are paving the way and have to solely figure out the solution to the problems presented from going this fast. The whole team has done an amazing job, most of which you can't see by looking at the car. We had a accusump failure which prevented us from running it (had no backup), but the internal changes the team did to the car made it hold up to the abuse that caused it to blow up in the past. After tearing the transmission down and finding out what happened, we will be that much further ahead in terms of reliability with the aim of taking the overall record of 1:43.5 held by the HKS EVO. It's attainable, the platform has the potential, and we are looking forward to the next one.

Thanks,

-Billy Johnson

Thanks for the congrats guys. It was a tough decision by RTA to allow slicks but it was the right decision as one tire has been killing the field the past few years. Now the playing field is a bit more level with the unlimited teams being able to choose from a larger vendor base.

Danny, hows that Yoko sponsorship going? We can always put in a good word for you:wink:

We hope to see more of the "top" level NSXs out there competing in the future as we can sure use the help defending the NSX badge!

Mikey - Do you know of Yoko has any r-comps in a 19"/20" in development? Running a GTR for RTA and need some good tires!!

March 29th, 2009 Buttonwillow, CA:

FX Motorsports Development, Billy Johnson, and Yokohama Tire set Buttonwillow Redline Time Attack track record and become The Fastest U.S. built Time Attack car.

Despite some of the worst conditions seen at a Buttonwillow Time Attack event, FX Motorsports Development (FXMD) with driver Billy Johnson was able to crush the previous record for the fastest U.S. built time attack car by over 1.5 seconds, with the final lap time of 1.45.516! This time was fast enough to capture the overall grand championship of the first round of the 2009 Redline Time Attack season and set a new record for the overall fastest car at Redline Time Attack.

Crew chief Mike Angel said, “I cant say enough about the team and their ability to overcome hurdle after hurdle. It was a total team effort that made this incredible feat possible.” During the 2nd day of testing, the FXMD Acura NSX suffered from oiling issues due to the loss of its Accusump. In addition, fuel starvation reared its ugly head as Billy produced more lateral G’s than the car has ever felt before. The combination of these two issues severely limited the amount of testing time Billy was able to run to further feel out and set up the car.

In addition to the mechanical issues FXMD faced, they had to persevere some of the harshest conditions ever seen at a Buttonwillow Time Attack event. Sunday’s air temperatures were significantly lower than the heat that was found on Saturday, but the cause of that cool air was the wind. The National Weather Service reported sustained wind speeds between 20 and 30mph in the area, and gusts as high as 40mph. Making matters worse was the prevailing direction North to South, which gave drivers a hefty crosswind to deal with while on the front straight and the back turns and bus stop. Watching the cars, you could see very clearly the effect the winds had, as cars appeared to shimmy through the bus stop more than usual.

Billy Johnson said, “Our team (FXMD) has been working on this car for months, pulling all-nighters to get it finished in time. The whole team has done an amazing job, most of which you can't see by looking at the car.” When asked about the future of the car and its potential Billy stated, “The NSX platform has a lot of shortcomings in the drivetrain. Since we are the fastest NSX generating more grip than any other car, we are paving the way and have to solely figure out the solution to the problems presented from going this fast. Once we solve the drivetrain and oiling issues we believe the current overall record held by the HKS EVO will fall. It's attainable, the platform has the potential, and we are looking forward to the next one!”

We would like to thank all of our sponsors for their superior track proven products and unwavering support. Special thanks to Sam Hwa from Yokohama tire for providing us the track side knowledge and advice throughout the entire weekend.
