Acura ILX commercial

No. Honda basically took the 4 door civic Si and put some leather in it and called it an ILX and sells it for a ton more. Why anyone would even consider this car is beyond me. Instead of innovating like Honda has done in the past and because they are struggling for sales in the Acura line they pull a B.S. move like this. No effort, no pizzaz, no soul to the car. Lazy. Asleep. Lobotomy. Those are the words that come to mind.

Scion and Subaru on the other hand offer a RWD coupe while Honda rolls over and goes to sleep again.

Hrant,

Do you think Acura will ever offer something RWD like Lexus is 250/350, Nissan 350/370Z or the new Scion?

Your crystal ball is as good as mine. My guess is that from an engineering perpective, they are too vested in fwd technology. Unless it is a statement product/model like an NSX, retooling to compete in rwd segment may be difficult to justify financially.

The ILK is not a Civic (Acura tried hard to disassocite it from the Civic) - though it uses "close" to the same platform/chassis but not 100%

I'm driving a 6-speed 2.4L Premium.

Have put 2,500 miles on it since taking delivery on 6/12/12.

Fun? You bet. Long list of standard features (push button start, back up camera among them). Acura's gone to quite a bit of work to keep this car from feeling like a Civic. Add'l sound deadening. Heaver weight in the shift knob. Not a single body panel in common. All the Acura amenities on a quality interior. I'd say considering what they started with, this is a pretty badass ride. And it's driven by the same 2.4L as the TSX yet is lighter, so there's no shortage of get up & go.

Test drive one, you might be surprised.

From the pictures in here, the car is much better looking than I expected. Especially the interior. From the doors forward, it sort of reminds me of the 3rd gen TL.

Hmm, well.... those pictures make it look pretty nice

The car is pretty bad ass. Go check one out in person before you pass judgment. Everyone liked the 04-08 TSX. (I have an 08) Then the current TSX came out for 09 and everyone complained that a near perfect car was now ruined by becoming too big. The current TSX is almost the same size as the 04-08 TL that everyone also loved. Now Acura gives us the rebirth of the 04-08 TSX and people complain again?

And I really don't understand all of the comments at the start of this thread about the use of premium gas. I've never understood the hangup with that. I've heard it hundreds of times and still don't understand what difference the $1.50 to $2.00 more per tank makes. I drive 20k miles per year in my 08 TSX. I've played around with 85, 87, 89 and 91 that we have here. I just watch my gas mileage go down with every lower grade that goes in. I'm paying for the performance and technology. Why not use it?

The interior is much nicer than the Civic with better material, navigation screen, etc.

4cruizn,

Nice pics!

Just curious did you have to pay MSRP or is there room for negotiation with the dealer since the car is brand new.

Is the navigation screen high def like the TSX/TL? IIRC it is but just want to confirm.

Enjoy the ride!!!

Tyson put a exterior kit on that to make it look a bit more sporty, this car interior resembles my TL which is so much fun to drove. Do you plan on putting 500,000 miles on that ILX like you did with that beautiful coupe legend?

Yeah, pictures don't do it justice. The car has a nice "presence" and has just enough of a taste of Acura without it looking exactly like the other sedans in the lineup. The designers have done a good job with proportions to make it feel like a much bigger car than it really is.

Ha, I'm sure the nice background helps too. Those were taken on a fun little one-lane road in Pioneer Park in my hometown in St. George, Utah. Love the red rock landscape up there.

Agreed, it's a baby TSX. Even more than that, I feel like this car is a worthy tribute to the Integra - a fun economical 4 cyl that handles amazingly right out of the box.

Definitely.

Right now I am involved in a partnership of sorts with Acura. I'm driving the ILX for a year and blogging about my adventures on my "Drive to Five" blog that I had been tracking mileage updates on my Legend with (http://drivetofive.wordpress.com). At the end of the year, the ILX becomes mine but I'll be responsible for tax implications. That said, I don't know about negotiation room on the dealer's end but I suspect that there are some great incentives as Acura wants to get this car moving. The ILX 6MT 2.4L equipped as mine is runs about $30k, plus the accessory add-ons.

The Nav screen on Tech-equipped models is 8" (perhaps even bigger than current TSX/TL). One thing to keep in mind is that you cannot order the Tech package with the 6-speed manual.
Do you plan on putting 500,000 miles on that ILX like you did with that beautiful coupe legend?
It'll take me awhile to get there, but I certainly do plan on driving this ILX quite a bit. I'm already planning some big summer adventures. I've driven through 4 states already (UT/AZ/NV/CA) and I'll be doing a cross-country trip to Milwaukee, WI and back at the end of next month. Excited to get the car out on the open road and see how it behaves.

I do still have the Legend. It turned over 500,000 miles on the original engine, trans, and clutch last November at the Drive to Five celebration at Acura headquarters in LA.

At 514,300 miles now it's gone through 158 oil changes, 2 alternators, 6 timing belts & water pumps, 4 windshields, and only been towed once when the original fuel pump died at 399,750 miles. It starts up every time. I plan on driving it to work once a week to keep it maintained, but it's otherwise in retirement mode now and loving it. This is a pic I took a couple weeks ago. Still original paint minus the front end which was redone in 2007 after I hit 2 deer in Texas with it.

Is it factory ride height or it's been lowered?
Factory ride height on mine, but I'm sure the aftermarket industry is already offering suspension upgrades for those who wish to go that route.

I did drop the ILX off this morning at 2,500 miles on the odometer for a couple service items with Acura of Tempe. They're going to reset the TPMS light - it's been giving me an error since the car had about 50 miles on it. Probably just an activation issue. They're also touching up a very small scratch on the driver's door that we suspect may have happened during transport of the car to Arizona.

Service advisor said I'm the "guinea pig." First ILX driver to bring a car in for maintenance so far.

Congrats Tyson. We've met before, but I'm sure you won't remember. I worked at Jody Wilkinson Acura for years. I missed the Legend meet however.

One thing I'm sure you'll love is the timing chain on the ILX. You saved yourself 6 timing belt services right there!

500,000 miles! Good Job.

If I add up the miles on my 3 Acuras, I'm almost there. 175,000 on my 1st Gen Legend Coupe, 167,000 on my 2nd gen TL-s (current dd), and 100,000 on my nsx, that is since '89, and I've put about 250,000 or so of that myself.

I'm ready to scale down on my TL to something smaller, perhaps even a beater civic, but maybe I'll take a look at the ILX. I like honda reliability and would be willing to pay a little extra for Acura premium.

My wife, who even worked at Hoen Acura in high school doesn't think Acura does a good job of marketing themselves as premium; certainly not like Lexus.

I like the interior of the ILX, I'm undecided about the exterior. I would like to drive it to compare to the TSX and TL that I really enjoyed test driving at an auto event last year. Tyson, let me know when you're available.

As the French say, "tastes and colors can't be argued over."

But you are being unnecessarily too harsh in your judgment if you haven't actually spent some time with/in the car. If you like the looks of the IS250, this is quite similar and may even have better aerodynamics since they spent quite a bit of time on it - though Acura could not offer a cd number when asked.

the interior like all recent honda interiors looks amazing imho.

the exterior i am mixed, almost like a civic on michael bay transformers steroids.

in canada we've had the acura el/csx for about 15 years now (civic based acura 4 door entry sedan) so we've been pretty used to this car as this is merely its newest incarnation.

Better do it quick. Strong rumers suggest the TSX is going away and the next gen TL that is due soon will be a bit smaller in size. The current TSX is nearly the same size as the 04-08 TL and is the exact same height. No need for 4 sedans.

Based on recollection of when we test drove a 4 cylinder TSK back in late 2010 - but opted to buy the V6 version and very happy with that choice, the 2.4 ILK is more nimble than the 4 cylinder TSK.

But as I noted earlier, the ILX has some new features/accessories, seems to be roomier in the back, but then it also lacks a few very basic features - like no eye/sun glass holder pocket near the visors in any of the models/upgrades!

Just test drive one. I am sure the dealers will offer you free coffee and more than one donut

This comment is so extreme in the negative that it provides ample evidence of the quoted post consisting of the same fecal material.

C'mon. Even if you don't like it, that's not even a reasonable aesthetic judgement.
