J.D. Power: Styling biggest reason people reject Acura

that RL looks so plain,vanilla,maxima....hyundai is killing it in styling:rolleyes:

Hyundai actually is jumping leaps ahead of some of the other manufacturers. Once thought to be a crappy built car it has come a long way.

The current VW/Audi front-fascia (namely upper/lower grilles) are rally influenced, as such design/styling cues have been prevalent in the past/current Mitsu Lancer series, Nissan R35 GT-R, etc'. Even Honda has been influenced by such w/ their '11 Accord coupe refresh.

FWIW, the '11 RL has a revised (more tame/subliminal) front-grille...

I haven't kept up w/ anyother year-to-year changes/updates w/ the other current Acura models. Though, the MDX would be an offering that I'd give consideration to if I was in the market for a mid-sized premium/luxo' SUV w/ 3-row seating.

2x! My personal fav' would be '05-'08 RL front-fascia w/ the '09-'11 RL rear-fascia, that would be my ideal late-model premium/luxo' import sport-sedan (the RL'specific SH-AWD driving experience, overall build-quality, excellent fit-&-finish, great ergonomics & refined styling, lotsa tech., etc' ).

what's up with the Hitler mustache on the 2011 RL?

Other than the MDX, the only recent vehicle that looked decent was their A-Spec RL.

Sadly....the last two good looking cars to come from the Acura label.

Just like the OEM tailpipes on the '91-'94 NSX's. "Oval Uglies"

Upon returning from Honda in Japan and after many discussions, I think they have a new corporate mission statement that does not dwell on sport, performance, style, etc, etc. With much of it top secret, who really knows?

You can bet this though ...... A printed battery and non-oil engines are more important to them now than a new logo or trying to look or perform like an Audi or MB. Let's not lose sight of the fact that Honda is an engine company before it is a car company. They also remind me of P&G, Disney, Starbucks, FOX and Apple .................

Let's enjoy the NSX now and forever then look back on this thread in 2020 and laugh.

HONDA .... we must DREAM!

well said Rich but I still say ...poopy on them.....

Interiors are becoming very dated.

Hmmph...I think that's one of Honda/Acura's strong points. Their interiors are great. Elegant and visually appealing.

At the very least, they're too forward looking instead of "outdated." Although, obviously, ymmv.

That's part of the Advance package on the RL and MDX. That's what senses if there is an object in front of you for the adaptive cruise control, ACC and the collision mitigation braking system, CMBS.

Speaking of grills...I saw a mesh grill on a 4th gen TL this morning and it markedly improved the car's look. Gave it an almost sinister form:

I still think that's terrible. It looks like The bastard child of a Caddy CTS and the TL

no longer Legend'ary...

I'd love to see something similar for the '09+ RL! Instead of the billet-like crisscross chrome mesh, may be some spread'out horizontal chrome-slats (ala '05-'08 RL/Legend) but still w/ the emblem in the middle & the upper crest-like shield portion minimized (as-in this custom TL front-grille).

EDIT: there are analogous offerings for the '09+ RL...

I like the Honda Legend grill from Japan.

From another acura site:

I know i've said this before, but anyways, the beak isn't the problem. it's the execution.

this is what made the beak look good, what allowed it to go through management:

somehow we ended up with this
1_1_1_1_1_1_2010_acura_tl.jpg

it may be just a few subtle differences, but the impact is huge. the silvery shiny plastic that Acura uses in the production TL's grille is not the same as the more subdued, classier looking metal on the concept. And why they decided to let it ride up into the hood rather than being aligned with the headlights, like in the concept, is beyond me.

I prefer the "pre-update" styling of the 3rd gen RL...

That's why I bought mine!

As far as the other cars in the lineup right now, the shovel-style grille has started to grown on me on the MDX. It still seems quite horrid on the TL and "updated" RL though. The ZDX is not appealing to me in general and with the RDX the interior dash styling is the only thing that I don't appreciate. Surprisingly I think that the new TSX wagon was decent looking when I saw one at a dealer the other day.

I test drove the RL before the MMC and it was a great car, a little too "luxury" and not enough "sport" for me though. I saw the refreshed RL and the new beak looks decent, not ordinary but not ridiculous anymore either. I didn't like the rear though.

Really dug how the '10 6MT TL drove, on the fence about the looks though, waiting to see how the '12 MMC turns out.

RL is indeed kinda meh. I own an '05 and still can admit this.

Surely it's no Aston Martin Rapide sedan but it's not a shovel nosed TL either!

Mmmm... Rapide...

Spoon Legend (RL):

Tsuchiya from Best Motoring was quite impressed with the Spoon Legend (RL) as can be seen in this video of the Legend and a NSX-R on the track:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wXFxiEGEUf0

In addition to his touring car and endurance racing experience Tsuchiya is also known as the "drift king" and he couldn't get the car to spin despite his best efforts thanks to the SHAWD.

Although I think in his closing comments he mentions that the RL would make a good platform for a very safe "Senior Class" racing series... Ummm...
