Top Loading AR-15

So I stumbled on a great deal on a AR-15. Problem is it's a california legal top loader. Which means you basically gotta break the gun open at the pivot and load it from the inside because it's a fixed max with a fixed base plate on the lower receiver. But... it's legal!

Is it even worth it to spend any sort of money on something like that? I mean it feels like it's not even an AR-15 anymore! I figure I'd get it before Big O does anything drastic in the off white house (the white house, it's not technically white, seriously)

Sigh...

If that is the only legal AR-15 available to you , I would consider getting a Ruger Mini-14. Shoots the same ammo and is still legal in a lot of places. Good gun , I have 2 of them. The last one I bought was at Wal-Mart - After the Brady bill / Assault weapons ban and Connecticut's AWB , it is still legal to own in many places. Also used by police in some areas , carried in passengers footwell mount instead of riot gun.

My good bud had a stainless ruger mini 14, 223 m16 ammo, sweet gun he had it looking pretty paramilitary and what a blast to go through a few clips on the range.

And people will actually buy those?

The mini 14 is an excellent gun +1. It looks awesome in stainless.

What do you think Jeff, the mini14 of the SU16CA?

So it seems like a NO on the top loader AR 15. And I just read the lower receiver on the top loader is a polymer instead of metal, bummer.

I found a couple gear deals on used 14's and 16CA's so far. Looking at about $450 used Stainless 14, and $300 so far on used 16CA. I remember those minis being ALOT cheaper back about 6-8 years ago, like $400 or $450 new.

I was considering going with an AR15 myself. I did not like how they had to be broken open to load so i went with an Entreprise Arms FAL. It has a CA Dust cover which stays open on top when the bolt is back. It allows the use of 10 round stripper clips. Easier to load IMO then the AR15s. Heres some Pics.

This is the Full size. They make CA legal carbine versions as well.

Heres the website. http://www.entreprise.com

dont buy it, you can get a regular ar15 with a bullet button. bullet button is only about 25 bucks or so and it is considered a fixed mag since it requires a tool to release it. go to calguns.net and search, my buddies and i all have ar's with the bullet button.

How much would it cost for me to get one? Legal and legit and simple, used hopefully.

only thing is that you're a few weeks late for the price. before you were able to get one for 650 complete. after the election the prices on everything went up in price. the same rifle went up 100, but it is less expensive when you piece it together as well. you could always wait to see if the frenzy dies down since they cant ban it overnight. here is the link to the complete rifle http://www.freakshowbullets.com/product_info.php?cPath=52_88&products_id=257 , you might be able to call him and work on the price

Thanks :)

Thats what every single dealer in person has told me, DON'T BELIEVE WHAT YOU READ ON ANY FORUMS.

So Jeff, I believe I should heed your advice to fair on the safe side.

Sorry if i sound ignorant, but do these laws apply to just "new gun" purchases or can you buy "legally" a used preban AR in Cali? Back before Brady bill banished you could still but preban weapons "legally" here but they were twice the price. Preban AR's were around $2000/$2500 each at the time.:frown:

prices on everything are sky high right now with no signs of coming down. stripped lowers use to go for 85-120 depending if you got them on a group buy or not. one ca dealer in particular is selling a stag lower for 299 in store, i bought it for 125 from them in the summer. ammo prices are climbing as well

So I have'nt been keeping up to date. What are the supposed gun law changes predicted to be when "change" happens. What about concealed permit laws?

I say days after Big O takes power if he feels like it. The democrats will be full control of the Senate, House and White House. Majority party will be creating the laws, passing the laws and enforcing the laws.

As for exact changes, I have no idea. Big O has flip flopped a few times on gun control or went clear as mud.

In california, I'm seeing "Off List Lower Receiver" AR 15's for sale in the $750+ range. These are with the bullet buttons. Facts are hard to rely on when it comes to forums but one fact that's hard to deny is that californians are making SUCCESSFUL FFL transfers instate with these OLL ARs.

i have a mini-14 it is a great rifle you can mod it any way you want you can easily get high volume clips for it (although the high volume clips are illegal in california). ruger makes great guns. one person with a ruger mini -14 apparently shot the crap out of a bunch of FBI agents once and that led to a overhaul of the entire FBI arsenal. OTOH might you consider a shotgun? according to a lot of law officers shotguns are the defensive weapon of choice for civilians. they scare the crap out of criminals.

All I know is that I'm picking up an AR and 6.8 upper before January 20something.

Oh it's not for the main purpose of shooting anyone for any purpose. I just actually want a really cool looking, good shooting target rifle to take down some ground squirrels, pigeons (the florescent type set down on the ground), and cans from 100-200+ yards.

Basically I just want a cool rifle for the sake of sporting, nothing more, nothing less. Maybe hunting. (Damn wish I had the cash for a Steyr!)

Speaking of shotguns, Saiga has some WICKED semi auto shotguns
