what would you buy for 80-90K?

I think the SL55 would be an awesome buy. I would like to pick one up some day. My wife is desperate for a convertible now...

I'd stay away from any Modena that was $80-$90k. They are like the 911 Turbos, there will be so many ultra-low mileage ones available, you'll take a bath on it if you drive it and put any real miles on it.

If I could get a 360 Modena F1 of my colour/spec' preference for $100k, own-it/drive-it for 3-4yrs as-if it was a car, not a Rembrendt... and then get $67k for it in return: I'd be content. 9k-12k miles/yr on a 360 Modena, maintain/service it as'per manual, that's the plan. I'd love to do even more miles- but as w/ the NSX, at times one needs more utility, space & comfort or there are weather/climate issues.

Letting something depreciate w/o getting gratification out of it is no different than burning some greenbacks.

I would still consider the 997 cab...

,,, The Mercedes SL55 AMG. Its a big supercharged V8 that rumbles around and is really fast. Its also VERY comfortable.

There's not really all that much to ponder, to be honest. The more you query, the more random suggestions akin to personal tastes & subjective insights you'll end up getting.

As per your 997 911 cabriolet comment, it reminded me of something. If I was looking at the 997 911's, I'd give the BMW ///M6 a closer look. Initially, only a coupe will be offered (electro-chromatic roof  ), but a convertable & CSL spec' will follow.

Re: Bee-Emm'z

I'd go with a 2001 NSX with super low miles, a CTSC, the ROH rims I have now, along with a navi setup and I/H/E... all the goodies with the old nose!

Or an S55 AMG.. big and fast

On the other hand a Range ROver'd be nice

The Z06 out performs everything on your list easily, has the creature comforts (NAV, HUD,etc.) you want, and is below the price point your looking at. You aren't interested in it because of the "cache factor" that a few girls mentioned to you?? So you really want to just look good to a few girls? It's tough to beat the Z06 performance-wise. You drive an Insight, and think the Z06 is low on the cache factor scale?? Get an NSX or whatever other bling is going to make a few northeast girls happy. I'd be looking for something that makes me happy first and worry about others later. The NSX won't disappoint you, but apparently you aren't the only one it needs to satisfy. Good luck.

Although I'd like the 360 Modena the upcoming FF3 could mean the NSX popularity will be going up so go for the NSX if you want it.

Dam Doc, take it easy man! I don't think there is anything wrong with the fact that I am honest and I mention the cache factor. Of course I care about performance, but just like everyone has many criteria for buying a car, the cache is one of mine. Its not all of it, or one of the top ones, but is one of.

Look man, I am a single guy that is still young enough to drive these sorts of cars. If I went to the track and didn't live in pot-hole ridden traffic packed Boston, I would consider the Z06. But this is a barely tamed race car and the comfort level is low. The fact that women around the snobby northeast see it as a chevy, doesn't help tilt the decision any further. I may not agree with them, but its just one of those things I am not going to explain. To them its just a Vette, a car that does not have any "class". You and I may not agree, but it is what it is.

Please... don't label me as "someone who just wants to look good to a few girls". I don't need a car to do it for me. But I am telling you that car will be a rolling joke in some of the trendy spots around here. If anything its Chevy's own fault producing crap for 20 years then deciding to make a good car like the Z06. There is no reason why Chevrolet shouldn't have Cache. But sadly, it doesn't.

heres my top choices. #1 being my first choice

1. NA2 NSX
2. Ferrari 355
3. Porsche GT3
4. Aston Martin Vantage DB7 V12
5. Porsche 993
5. Porsche 930
6. Mercedes CL55
7. Mercedes SL55

imvho from what you have said get the sl 55. if you can wait a little and are willing to go $110,000 then the 2007 aston martin vantage will be a great choice.

for my money i bought a 02 nsx and immediately proceeded to mod it. the only other car i seriously looked at was the f355, but it doesn't sound like you want as pure a sports car.

good luck, and keep in mind your's is a wonderrful "problem" to have.

what would you buy for 80-90K? ULTIMA GTR 2100 lbs 0-60 in 3.3 and 0-100 in 8.4 with a standerd 5.7-Liter corvette LS-1 engine with only 345hp then with the extra money I would supercharge the thing and have something that would blow the doors off just about anything on the track/street. Doesn’t sound what you are looking for but the question was what would I buy for 80k-90k

I have actually thought of making that leap and buying a new Vantage. I am test driving one anyway. But there are a lof of questions with Aston, the first being I don't want to spend 117K (with options) and then sell the thing in two years for 60K because thats all it will pull... My gut says this is the baby Aston and should hold its value pretty well. But who knows...

the NSX is a superstar when it comes to this. I am assuming mainly due to the Honda reliability and its rarity. This is why I have no qualms about buying a new NSX no matter what it costs. Those guys that bought an NSX in 1991, they did pretty well.

After all it is not what a car costs that matters, but what a car costs to own. I think everything I am looking at is over the top. But I have driven 3 super luxury cars in the past few years, bought used, and in some cases actually MADE money the year after. It pisses my friends off that they drive a Ford and I drive a V12 Mercedes, yet I lose less money on my car than they do.

And you would drive this everyday?

If I could do it all over again, and feel more comforable caughing up the dough upfront at purchase instead of via mods during the first 12 months of ownership, my list, in no particular order, would be:

996TT, 996GT3, 02+ NSX.

I think that during the winter, Id be happiest in the TT vs the other two, which would sit in the garage for the most part. During the summer, Id be happiest with the GT3 or the NSX. Id probably have to leave the GT3 stock though (do people mod GT3s? I donno) and that would make me less excited.

I would *probably* get the 02+ NSX again, but having the NSX for a little over 12 months, I have learned that some things that we not at all important to me when I got it, have turned out to be attractive. Im talking about the year around driveabillity of the Pturbo and the back seats for baby seats. The heat is on from my wife to get a new M5 for that reason alone and I cannot physically own more then one car for myself. In the coming years I may need a lift in the garage while if I had a Pturbo, it would be much easier.

Food for thought.

Good Lord people. WE ARE NOT HELPING HIM AT ALL:redface:

Ultima GTR:confused: - He lives in Boston. He wants a nice car, preferrably a cab or targa to go out on Fridays, and Saturdays. He is single and wants the cache of driving a nice car. The Ultima, or the Z06 DONOT meet his criteria. If he pulls up in the Ultima - the Valet guy is going to do the VW impression from UNPIMP my ride- "whhat is zat??" plus his GF is going to refuse riding in it. Its a street legal race car after all. His DD has looks that only a mother could love:wink: So that is not an option.

IMHO, the SL55 is nice, fast and Convert - however, it just doesn't impress me as much as a Aston Martin AMV8. The 997 again IMHO is a ugly fat porker with a big ole butt. The fact that is is fast, handles well and can run at the track forever are the only reason I would consider it. If your GF thinks it has a 80's interior she should go see a 964 or a 993. Those have a 60's or 70's interior. - again IMHO.

I would say - given the choices I would go with SL55 if you need a convertible, or if you can stretch your finances a AS AMV8. That thing looks like pure Sex. Otherwise a F355 cab or targa will get you plenty of attention. Just be prepared to pay dearly for it.

Good luck.

Good points. The comfort level on a 355 etc. isn't any better than a Z06, but it definitely has cache. The SL 55 would be fantastic. It seems to fit the bill for all your criteria. Love the Aston Martin, but don't like the Ford involvement. Have fun on your decision. Take care.

If your looking at the SL55 AMG, I would recommend purchasing a SL600 and spending $4k on a renntech ecu reflash and presto! you'll have sl65 performance:eek:

My good friend and neighbor had a sl55 which i drove and rode in many times...high super charged hp but talk about a porker, its 4300lbs, thats a 1000 lbs more than the 997!!! Therefore, its not going to give you nsx, 997, ferrari type handling...not even close!!!! Its a high speed cruiser, better suited to german autobahns than the U.S....and my friend got rid of the car due its legendary mercedes reliability, 6 visits to the dealer in 1 year....I would get the carrera S, or the na2 nsx...but great handling, fast cars , both legendary and both sound great...As for the 997 interior, it was univerisally praised by the auto. press as a big step foward and I like it a lot...

i

As nice looking and nice driving as the AMG cars are, I just cant get over the fact that the third pedal is missing. I guess if you spend a lot of time in heavy traffic it might be preferrable, but not for me. I simply could not purchase a sports car--from AMG to ferrari to even the new NSX unless it has a manual clutch. Even when I look into the pornography that is the Aston Martin line-up, unless its fully manual, I dont want it.

If not I would recommend a 996tt with turbo upgrades of course:biggrin: I believe you can pick up a nice 02 turbo for about 75k-ish and spend another 15-20k upgrading your turbos and you have a nice daily driveable 500-600whp supercar that costs about 90k:tongue:

My brother's 911 has about 500whp and all I can say is:eek:  I wish my NSX could go that fast:frown:

So you like the luxury comfort..

and you like the sport feeling...

and you want the looks of rarity and the looks of aww

In my opinion one car fits this requirement and at half your budget...

its........... BMW 850CSI.......................

Its comfortable, luxurious, and you get a sporty manual shift, and its super sexy (one of the sexiest cars in my opinion), and best of all its very very rare.

I have a regular 850i, and i get more looks in that then in my nsx, or when i had a rolls royce silver spur, or a 67 mustang shelby clone.

Not to mention i can drive around and i will see many ferrari, porsche, nsx, mercedes sl, cl etc.....before i even see 1 of the BMW "Elusive Eight"

Get the very rare limited 850CSI

Assuming we absolutely have to buy a car, pocket the money is not an option, and I don't already own NSX, my top choices are:

1. 02+NSX with CTSC or any 97+ NSX coupe with CTSC and 02 front conversion.
2. F355
3. SL55
4. C6 Z06
5. R34 GTR

Good luck finding a R34GTR for 90k. Last I heard, the street legal R34's are
going for 100k+

Please give me an opinion. If you had 80-90K to spend on a car (your second car, not your primary car), what would you buy? I just sold my Mercedes CL600. I loved the car, supremely comfortable, quick, utterly luxurious, but... its my second car and sometimes I was just bored. I want something with an open top. I would like a stick... I am constantly fidgeting with my manu-matic pretending I am shifting...

I have considered these other cars...

Porsche 02-04 996T, or 05 997 carrera... can't stand the interior... not in love with the exterior either... they are a dime a dozen. But it holds it value second only to the NSX and they are fast.

Mercedes Benz SL55/SL600 2003-2004. Convertible, 500+ HP, very comfortable. Automatic only... fairly common.

02-04 Maserati coupe. Comes in convertible, stick, 400 HP. Rare, Decent looking, but questionable build quality. Questionable reliability. Questionable resale value.

02-05 NSX. Stick, T-top. Reliable. Great resale value. 15 year old design, no nav, a bit weak, I wouldn't consider it luxurious.

Ferrai F355 or 2000 Modena. Exotic. Holds its value well. Maintenance is crazy. Insurance is way up there. Forget a spyder in my price range.

New Jag XK. S/C model to come out in September. Good looking car. Questionable resale and reliability, no stick.

I did also consider a Z06, but the few girls I know and have mentioned it to, have pretty much ruled that one out. A Vette just has a very low cache factor in the northeast.

I am single, in my mid 30's. I have a honda element daily driver work vehicle.

I have thought about buying an 05 NSX. Sending it to Comptech and getting the SC. Then sending the car to a shop and having a stereo/nav installed. Not sure what that will do to my warranty and resale.

Really I just want the new NSX. But its not here.

What are your thoughts? I live in Boston. We have crappy roads and not much place to "run". But I refuse to drive a boring car.

Skyline GTR. Could be considered a little ricey though I guess. Fun car to drive though.

That’s a pretty good list.
I also would go with an Ultima or a 7 or a Nobel
But you want luxury so maybe an Esprit V8 is worth a look.
But if you want to impress the kind of girls you are talking about then you have to go with the Ferrari.
They will just about wet their knickers if you pick them up in that.
I was at a meet before a drive last week and we had some nice cars parked and two girls walked past and saw the cars and one says to the other “are there any Ferraris?” and they shake there heads and turn away. We could have had an F1 there and they would not know.
Also if you have not already got one, get a Rolex because they sure as hell wont know what a Patek or a Ulysse Nardin is.

Regards,

Patrick
