Congrats on your update! I myself work in tech industry (silicon valley) for 19 yrs and of course like everyone else I did work hard for my certifications (From CCNA,CCNP.CCIE to CISSP and pretty much all of Microsquish certs). Right now things are moving forward to the Cloud technology. Definitely there are Pro's and Con's about it but something to look at. Especially if your thinking about walking the path of security or maybe getting yourself into Project Management. <object width="425" height="344"><param name="movie" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/XdBd14rjcs0&hl=en&fs=1&"></param><param name="allowFullScreen" value="true"></param><param name="allowscriptaccess" value="always"></param><embed src="http://www.youtube.com/v/XdBd14rjcs0&hl=en&fs=1&" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" allowscriptaccess="always" allowfullscreen="true" width="425" height="344"></embed></object>
Also, taking CCNA classes are fine but you can do better if you setup your own network (buying used equipment from ebay) and using "Train Signal" IT Training DVD courses which I highly recommend. I have stacks of used cisco routers and switches which I can give you and as well my Train signal DVD's. You'll do just fine for both the CCNA and CCNP and yes I did pass my exams doing this method. Let me know if your interested!
Depends on where you work- at my company the scales range due to being part of the sales process. Contract size is a variable. The base is close to my current salary so contract incentives would be the increase.
