Does China deserve to host the olympics?

http://www.reuters.com/article/environmentNews/idUSL546769620080805

"BEIJING (Reuters) - Pollution in Beijing will not pose serious problems for the athletes and other visitors during the Olympic Games, the International Olympic Committee (IOC) said on Tuesday.

"I am confident that the air quality will not pose major problems to athletes and visitors here," IOC Medical Commission chief Arne Ljungqvist told the organization's 120th session.

He said data was being assessed on an hourly basis around the clock."

"Ljungqvist said Games organizers, Beijing authorities and the IOC had used strict World Health Organization standards and Beijing was meeting those."

Of three standards, Beijing's air quality was monitored according to the middle one, the so-called interim standard, used for developing countries, he said.

We used the WHO standards in evaluation," Ljungqvist said. "Those standards are fairly tough to meet but in many respects the Beijing area does."

Beijing's air quality will not good as Los Angeles, but it will not kill those people who living there.

I think this is the perfect time for China to host the Olympics.

China has an abyssmal record on human rights violations, the environment, labor problems (child labor, sweatshops, etc.), Tibet, freedom -- the list goes on.

Having the Olympics there will shine a bright light on the situation for the entire world.

Agreed. Not only does the world get a chance to see the modern China, but also more importantly, the Olympic Game provide a chance for China (our people, our government and our businesses) to get to see representatives from around the globe.

I am so disappointed to see the anti-Chinese sentiment reach NSXPRIME. It's nothing but racism, nationalism and xenophobia coming from hypocrites who have little understanding of objectivity, history and politics.

……..

There are Americans that agree, and blame the "Bush Administration" for these atrocities and do NOT blame "America" or "The United States".

However, when it comes to China, they do not blame a specific administration (e.g. "The Hu Administration"), they blame an ENTIRE people, and ENTIRE country and an ENTIRE race/history.

……

Agreed. I am a Hong Kong Chinese, but often when I was in the US, people would stereotype by saying “Chinese people this, Chinese people that, blah blah blah," as if I have any control over the entire country.

China had been invaded for decades during the turn of last century; endured a very nasty civil war (that still divides our people) after WWII; lost a few generations (no formal education, entire country just ceased to move forward) in a “revolution” caused by a leader named Mao.

After all this misery, the country picked up the pieces and almost completely industrialized itself to become largest exporter in the world. This is the perfect time to have such a “coming-out” party. Not just because of the economic achievement, but more as a “Chinese people’s misery is FINALLY over” type of celebration.

Am I happy with the political system/human rights condition/pollution of the country? Heck, no! However, we should not let that take away the spirit of the Olympic Games. It’s a celebration of athletes, sportsmanship, friendship and fair competition.

That was so much more poignant than my post.

LMAO again!!!

Please define freedom of speech.

According to you, they can't talk shit, but they have F1 races, International trade center, THE largest Ferrari meets in the world (with Chinese owners), and the largest retail market in the history of civilization.:confused::confused::biggrin:

By the way, they do have Internet too available to all citizens who can afford it.

I don't really want to use the word ignorant again... but....

If you ever have a chance, take a vacation in China. You'll be surprise how different it is from description by CNN.

If you had said not all, fair enough. Many Chinese people have racist sentiments against other (as i've personally seen/heard-mainly asian races). I live in Japan i hear about it WEEKLY form both sides. Thank the governments, i love chinese people, all people for that matter. This topic was talking specifically about China. My second major was asian history, i've lived with chinese, vietnamese, filipino families all my life, i've lived in Japan for five years, i do have some idea.

Prove me wrong, taiwan cough media cough tibet cough. Don't even get me started on the internet. I'm certainly not wasting hours listing every book i had to read for the last TWENTY years or the stories *anecdotal from the families who have told me their situations and beliefs, like i said i'll agree to disagree.

Here's just one

whether china "deserves" to host the olympics or not...for the most part, we don't really play an active role in that decision making. to me, i still believe that the olympics represents freedom, i don't think people in china have much of that. on the subject of freedom in china...i was backpacking through china last march through april and i had freedom but freedom for the people that lives there...questionable.

for those who have been to china recently, have you tried to walk into a sex shop? i went in out of curiosity and guess what they have...only condoms, pills, and vibrators. porn is illegal in china. you can't look at the major international news website because that stuff is banned. guess what they do to you when they see you carrying a "lonely planet china travel guide?" they confiscate it because those books are illegal due to the fact that they speak of communism in there, and the fact that hong kong and taiwan is a different color from china on the map within. you can't openly buy that specific guide in china!

the chinese for the most part will avoid speaking about politics to you, wonder why?

about the pollution...maybe it's just depends on the time of year, but when i was there, i can look directly at the sun because it won't hurt my eyes, it's just an orange sphere in the sky, that's how much smog was in the air. i picked up a cough and i thought it was just a cold, i was coughing for 2 months whilst in china. i don't mean to be disgusting, but you guys should've seen the black diamond for boogers i was pulling out of my nostrils daily, i was thinking about putting it on a ring for my girlfriend, hahaha.

most of the cities i traverse to was for the most, polluted and huge! my 2 favorite cities of all time in china has to be guilin and guangzo! the last few beauties in china. great wall...not much left of it, terra cotta warriors...yawn. also, toilet paper is not mandatory in most public restrooms, there many times when i found the travel guide to be more useful than it appears:wink:.

i'm off my rant now, i'm hoping china does get the spotlight and change their ways.

Sex shop? This is getting better and better by the post. LOL

Here are a few (very amatuer) photos from my last trip. I also didn't notice any restrictions on the net while I was there, but I admit I didn't look up any porn. wiki and everything else I use worked fine.

Couple angles from my hotel room in Beijing. This is on the 3rd "loop" of the 6 highways that circle the city.

This a shot of the Yuejiang Tower in Nanjing. This is from a walkway OUTside with zero camera effects, not even flash if I remember correctly etc., the building seems to be holding up ok considering the supposed pollution filled air and acid rain..

Shanghai at night.. one of my favorite places in the world (I'm on a pretty big boat and moving while taking these)

wow, good discussion, and lots of posts, LOTS of posts, lol

and as far as posting pictures of ferraris in china, when my family was hosting the last exchange student from china i talked with him alot, mom-teacher, father-govt, which is the only reason his family had a car because his dad was in the govt, obviousley times have changed quite a bit over there lately seeing as how they can take however many millions of cars off the road to try and clear up the air for the olympics

On the politics note, people talk to me about politics, mostly not liking Mao, even when I don't bring it up [99% of the time]. I think it depends who you talk to and who they perceive you as. If you know Chinese fairly well and you are working with business owners and educated people they often discuss politics, probably more than we do.

As for the pollution, I think the argument here isn't if the pollution exists at all, it's if it exists where people say it does. It's awful in the heavily industrialized places in the west as those places you mentioned are if I remember correctly, and that's a major reason why the Olympics are* in Beijing. There are relatively few factories in or near the city. It's just irritating to people that have been there frequently to see fog characterized as immense and irresponsible pollution. In my experience none of the cities near the coast are noticeably bad, including Shanghai with the #2 population. Some of the inner provinces are terrible and I know what you mean. I recommend people not to try to exercise there outside. I run 3 miles at a 22-24 min pace 3 times a week in Houston and in Xi'an I ran one mile and said "f&*k that'.

hey sahtt, why did you go to china? just vacation?

Mostly what I mentioned in the last paragraph of post 44. In addition to that I was scoping out a couple places I may end up working if I choose to do so [if my current stuff doesn't make me wealthy enough fast enough].

sahtt,

now you're making me miss china a bit! hangzhou, that's the city with all of the water gardens right? if so, i like that city a lot. i miss all of the craziness i got into during the trip...basically, i bought a one ticket from sfo to beijing and got lost! i did 5 months in asia, covering china, vietnam, cambodia, laos, and thailand! that was a blast. i was also doing a bit of business in guangzhou, that city is so boring. this summer, if it weren't for school, i would've done 2-3 months in south america. that's going to be next summer for sure! but since i didn't get to travel abroad this summer, next thursday the girlfriend and i will being going to puerto vallarta for 6 days:biggrin:

Couple of points:

1. Freedom of Speech means independent free press(print and television) then can print and show anything they want. Not state controlled media and Television.

2. What the hell does the largest Ferari dealership and Ferrai meet have to do with it?

3. I wonder what % of avid China "supporters" on prime have chinese heritage.

Finally - I firmly believe that Olympics should be about Sport not politics and therefore feel that China deserves to host it.

There is a lot wrong in China.

Gentlemen.

U'll have to excuse the original poster of this silly thread.

Considering his age of mid-20's at the most, he is still learning much about life such as contending with premature ejaculation, how to be financially free from his folks and that if he were to travel in China like I have and some of you in recent years, then he will realize that his children will one day be a gardener to the rich Chinese in the United States of China who has a growing financial hold on our much beloved country.

Little does he realize that China is richer by $1 Billion every day.

How much does the USA have?

I'll give him a clue..... it's in the negative....

Westerners notion of freedom of speech, etc. that we are accustomed to aren't always applicable in every culture like the Chinese.

Just look at Russia and the eastern block countries.

their overnight freedom came at a price..... starting with organized crime taking over.

China has a large populace to contend with and they are going through "puberty"

Would you give your children "full freedom?"

Does this forum let you say anything you want without getting in trouble?
