The ceremony was incredible. I doubt anyone will ever top that performance in any form. There were over 15,000 performers! That was one of the best performances I've ever, and probably will ever see.

The official song of the 2008 Beijing Olympics.

the only thing overshadowing the opening performance was that 2 americans were attacked in bejong during it, 1 man killed, 1 woman injured, family of a coach of a us volleyball team, it was really breaking news this morning and havent had a chance to catch anything new on it yet

I support China. I find the Canadian protestors embarrassing. The man on the street in China seems to be a bit agitated about the protests.

Ummmm. With all due respect - You are wrong! If you immigrate to Canada, UK and most of Western Europe then you are allowed in due time to become a citizen of that particular country. They have made it more strict in Europe(Netherlands for eg.) due to possible muslim extremists entering their country but otherwise the policy is very similar to the USA.

No he's not. There are vietnamese that say they are american and are taken as such. There are chinese, russian, all sorts of races here that are american. If you are white, you will never be chinese in china. Never. It doesn't matter what your passport says. You can go to Germany and learn the langauge etc. but if you aren't of german blood you aren't 'german'. You are a german citizen. Not the same thing. In america you can become american, in the complete sense of the term because it isn't racial or due to ancestry. But yes, I get what you are saying.

I have two questions for you:

What is your take on this whole discussion since the topic is "does china deserve to host the olympic?"

The Olympics Games are a celebration of all things humanitarian, therefore I brought up the fact that China, as a country, is rather preaching one belief while enacting opposite principals.

In my view, the host of the Olympic Games, which stems from such noble heritage/background in itself, would be a country where protesters are not punish with "disappearing" acts from the government.

and

Does your passport from Taiwan has "Taiwan" printed on the front page? Interestingly, my has ROC printed all over it: Republic of China, not Taiwan. So what makes you a Taiwanese instead of Chinese? Even the native American Indians are consider "American: Citizen of United States of America;" they don't have a passport with "Indan Nation," Do they? How about this one, does Taiwanese have their own language or writing? Fascinating isn't it? Heck, while you're at it, let me throw in FREE TIBET just to make it more festive!!!
Oops! Didn't mean to crash your "festive" party so soon.

Don't blame me, you can credit former Democratic elect, DPP, President Chen-Shui-bian for having the word TAIWAN sprawled across TAIWANESE passports. Also, there is a difference between Republic of China (ROC) and People Republic of China (PRC) Not too long ago, China opted out of the Olympics for reasons as such that Taiwan was under the insignia ROC. Can read more about it here

And as for Taiwanese not having their own language...

Here's an excerpt from WIKIPEDIA
Táiyǔ is a variant of Amoy Min Nan Chinese spoken by about 70% of Taiwan's population.[1] The largest ethnic group in Taiwan for which Taiwanese is considered a native language is known as Hoklo or Holo (Hō-ló).

Have you not heard of Tai-Yu? I can start the lessons by teaching you how to pronounce China in Taiwanese.

Ok, all jokes aside. Talks about China and Taiwan's independence is contiguous with strong believers stemming at both ends. I'm not going to mitigate this issue any further. Alternatively, a sense of animosity often brews between the pro-independence group and the latter; NSXPrime is no exception. For me, this is my stand point and I anticipate Taiwan's "formal" UN/international recognition and that's the end of my story.

I don't know what you were reading.

This is what I'm reading. Republic of China. "Taiwan."

Taiwan as a "Province." The only province in Republic of China. Cool, huh?

Yes, Vance can read Chinese too!!! Probably equal or better than most Chinese Primers.

In your case, just take a magic marker and black out the ROP part and you can have your dream country.

Absolutely amazing!!!

By the way, there is no animosity; I rather enjoy being entertained by this so called "Taiwanese" dreams - A empty dream that will NEVER happen.

Fascinating, isn't it?

By the way, remember the 60's and 70's, the education system in Taiwan were also one sided. If you cheer for communism, you would have been in a permanent detention... Freedom of speech is offered as a privilege until unwanted words were spoken!!! Ten years ago, I visited Taiwan for the first time. I took a cab and the driver will only speak "Taiwanese" to me. When I told him I don't understand it, the ride was rather quiet. Lovely!!!

BTW Jerry, what is Otoro?

Therefore, you're an expert on why China shouldn't be allow to holst Olympic because you have Chinese people all figured out while living in Japan after major in Asian studies?:confuse

I majored in business/IT, I know every thing about computers.

I can sleep my ignorance I tonight!!!

Talking shit about something and raising legitimate concerns about a government(and not being able too)are two different things alltogether. I never said i knew everything about anything, nor that i was an expert, but i have gained insight living and talking with other cultures.

When i mention a country doesn't deserve something(regarding this topic) i talk of governments, not people. If the title of this thread was "Does America/Japan/Australia et al deserve to host the Olympics?" I would have also replied; "No they do not"(does anyone?). Laugh off other peoples opinions, it makes you sound clever.

Guys I havent read all the posts totally.
But I've been in China since the 1st of August and in Beijing since 7th of August for the olympics.
My grandmother was born in China and then migrated to Indonesia where my parents and I were born but i was later raised in Sydney. To clear up any allegiances or bias.
7th August Beijing 'fog', 'mist' or whatever you call it, was the worst I've seen in my life. I was extremely dissapointed considering how good it was prior to my arrival watching CNN and BBC in the hotel in Xian and Shanghai. I thought the 2 previous cities were bad. Me and the old man had a big argument and then i read the net articles and they were saying the 7th was the worst in 2 weeks. Got better only after heavy rain.
Was it having an impact on health ? It was to my dad, myself and a few other people I know but the worst was the humidity.
During the opening ceremony it was bad. I think you guys had a better seat than I did. Opening ceremony local tv show behind the scenes. Most of the performers are elite military forces! and the girl lip synched! and the fireworks CGI!
I hope they dont call it the best olympics. The beijing olympics doesnt represent what the olympics mean to me and I think most people.
Unless your a VIP, the beijing olympics is not spectator friendly.

In saying that, the government is having a hard time trying to balance stability with over 18million people just in the city and hundreds of thousands of western visitors most maybe first time visitors.
The lack of entertainment in the city itself or olympic atmosphere where people can hang around. You need a ticket to get into the olympic park. Tickets are the worst thing with the olympics. Mark ups as the chinese locals horded all the tickets and foreign allocations were so scarce.

Is Beijing a worthwhile city to visit ? yes. During the olympics? Unless you got lots of cash with VIP treatment and in the know, probably not.

Also, the speed of economic development is incredible the wealth cant match peoples progression in life. I mean China is full of ironies and quirks. My apartment we rented, which range from US$150,000K-600K to buy and regarded as middle class. Has an F430, S65 and countless S600 and other Luxuries and Exotics which are priced in excess of US$250K. I have never seen such economic disparity I've heard India and some parts of Africa are the same. But come on people's cars are worth more than there house! thats ridiculous. I should take pictures. because there parked outside on the street with bicycles!

Btw, I cant imagine if they had the factories opened, trucks on the road before 10pm and the other 1.5million cars on the road would be like.
Also, if Beijing had the olympics in 2000 omg cant imagine.

my .02 cents which doesnt get much during the olympics.

Thanks for the FIRST HAND report! The news in the states made mention that the government put a big wall around most of the "slum" like surounding neiborhoods, did you notice this? Was it an obvious illusion.?

You will see the difference between "kind of a Communism" and "Capitalistic Socialism.

Have you not heard of Tai-Yu? I can start the lessons by teaching you how to pronounce China in Taiwanese.

Funny you keep appealing to former President Chen Shui bian--he is currently under investigation for stealing over $31,000,000 (US) from the taxpayers of Taiwan and depositing it in an overseas Swiss bank account under his daughter-in-law's name. Both his son and daughter-in-law have fled to the US but he is being held by the court in Taiwan pending an investigation. That is money laundering! He is also accused of embezzling $14,800,000 (Taiwanese) from Taiwanese taxpayers.

The guy would fly on Air Force One (the Taiwanese version) everywhere he went. President Ma flies on commercial airplanes. I believe I have even heard he flies coach. I am not sure about that though.

The Taiwanese people chose someone else. It's not like mainland China voted in the election. IMO, they made the right choice--isolating yourself from China is not a good idea. I don't think ANY other country wants to isolate themselves from China. It's not the objective decision to make.

As for the language of Taiwan, I would say it is derived from Mandarin Chinese. Over time, it has developed into its own dialect known as Taiwanese. Anyone who speaks both languages knows that they share many words and traits.

What is also interesting is how Taiwanese has been bastardized by the Japanese language as well--stemming from the occupation of Taiwan by Japan and the fact that Japan educated an entire generation if not more of Taiwanese people in Japanese school systems.

Ask anyone from an older generation: they went to Japanese schools and they speak fluent Japanese.

So can you tell me why you don't harbor the same hatred towards Japan? I'm sincerely curious. I've noticed the trend among many pro-independence Taiwanese people.

Could it just be neural induction (i.e. brainwashing) by the Japanese?

As for myself, I'd just like to see peace and unity between all those involved.

There are wrongs in this country, and there are even more wrongs in China.

Give China a chance, it just opened up in the last 10 - 15 years.

Do we select the site of the next NEXPO based on political background of the state, democrat vs. republican? No, we dont. We look at the location., tracks and entertainment factors. Let's watch the Olympics and give the olympians their rightfully deserved credits for their hard work over the years.

PLAY BALL..

You are very correct with every thing. It is funny how the native people of Taiwan were free by the chinese from foreign occupation over and over. The Portuguese, the Dutch, and Japanese, and yet, and all of the sudden, they want independence just because...

You know the old Chinese saying... The little bird is all grown up and now the wing is big enough to fly away from the nest, but they don't know the potential hazard in the sky.

Taiwan is a strong strategic point for both China and US. Either one will let it go.

Also

Remember why the Taiwan poplulation elected their new president from the Nationalist part (the old ROC party) due to Chen-Shui-bian wrong doing. YOU CANNOT ELECTION SOME ONE TO BE THE LEADER JUST BECAUSE HE IS YOUR KIND BY SELF APPOINTMENT- Without the qualification. That's exactly what they did with Chen. History shows, people are stubborn.

ive been pwnd, enlightend, and humbled so im deleting this embarrassing first post because im tired of seeing it.

Well, I commend your edit.

But just in case you missed it, it was a GORGEOUS blue-sky day in Beijing (August 16, 2008):

xinsrc_18208051612383121415526.jpg

It's not always smoggy as some people keep portraying it as (by selecting the worst images they can find). Yes, Beijing does have problems with smog but it is not like that every day all the time.

I wonder if those US cyclists are still wearing their masks...

Vance,

Knowing you really well, I can see the frustration and picture your dismay, but you choosed to be frustrated. He may had thought you were Japanese or someone else from another country who speaks little Mandarian or Dialect. Taiwanese in nature are very courteous and friendly.

I never speak the dialect when I visit Taiwan every year (I can speak the dialect perfectly, just not my taste). Never a single issue at any given situation (shopping, nightmarket, restaurant, etc). Mandarian is the way in Taiwan. How you handle things can have two different outcome.

Remember my past incidents where I was not flexible enough and failed to acknowledge simple misunderstanding with some of our mutual friends. It was a shame, because later I found out how nice a person they actually are. It was my loss. How wonderful it is by not taking little things too seriously.

We had this discussion not too long ago, you know where I stand.

If you go back and read how this started, and read some of Jerry's post, you'll understand how I approach this thread.

But anyway, see you later on today. Hookah session is the best remedy:wink:
