Dyno chart-very impressive!!!

All: I had my bone stock OEM car dynoed (long story why I did that), and it showed an average of 252.3 hp (3 pulls). I am very impressed with the loss factor (not the overall hp number). The loss is around 18 hp out od a claimed 270), which means the parasitic loss is around 6.6%!!!
I have NOT seen or heard of a car as efficient as this. The usual number, in my experience, have been 15-25% loss....

That is pretty impressive for bone stock. Car and driver tested a 99 3.2L and got 249.5 WHP and a 14% parasitic loss.

That is what surprised me. very low loss comapred to any other car, even Germans that are supposed to be very efficient...
It is 91 with 44K miles, kept in excellent condition mechanically...
I was going to start doubting the numbers, but they were done at a reputable shop with (4NSX's were being worked on when I was there) and they did 3 pulls...hmmmm
 
Dyno's are misleading to begin with. They are good for finding the difference a tune or mod makes, but a baseline is just a baseline. It doesn't really tell you how much drivetrain loss you have. A dyno could report much higher numbers then another dyno and thats fine for tuning. You could try a bunch of different dynos are get much different results. Take for example Shawn Churches dyno, who did some of the early dyno's on the AP2 S2000. His dyno makes it look like the AP2 S2000 makes like 20 more hp than an AP1, which it doesn't.

Also some dyno's connect to the wheel hubs vs having rollers which could report higher numbers if the dyno isn't corrected for the difference.

Or, some engines got a little extra TLC when they are assembling it and makes more power than the norm. It is not unusal for some cars to make more power at the wheels than it does at the engine since they are very underrated from the factory.
 
I don't want to rain the parade :) but maybe the dyno was a little bit optimistic. :wink:

Compared to other stock cars (makes/models) dynoing on the same day under the same conditions, the NSX has always come in very conservative (not a lot of % loss).

A 270hp NSX will often out dyno a 278hp 350Z for example.

Just a nice perk of the car...

Make sense since the NSX is MR or a FWD setup in the back vs a FR. There should be a bit more drive train loss with an FR since the power needs to go through a long drive shaft. All other things being equal of course.

I've been told that's true. One way to tell is if the redline is a little higher than 8000 before the cutout. mine goes to about 8300. s14,is yours stock or modded?
 
Mine is modded with the basic intake, header, and exhaust combo. While 250whp is a bit on the high side, it is still in the norm esp in this weather. The ones that was a little bit hard to believe is the ones dynoing 300whp with bolt ons on a NA2. However his car was able to back that number up on different dynos on different years ( I'm referring to Vance's NSX ). Now that is insane a 300whp bolt on NSX!!!
 
Yeah, that is one of the few that received a little extra TLC during the engine assembly. It is the fastest known recorded stock USDM NSX, that exact one ran the 1/4 mile in 12.9 seconds @ 110mph. 99% of us here needs to be modded (not going the forced induction route ) and still can't hit that magical 110mph barrier. Which means with the power to weight ratio, its suppose to making around 300whp or more. I think they dynoed and ran 2 different cars. That car that ran the 1/4 mile was a time already documented by them from a silver nsx if i remember correctly and the 250whp dyno NSX is the yellow you saw in the video.

Those numbers are really good for bone stock. Mine dynoed at 263hp with Comptech intake, header, exhaust, big throttle body, and Dali chip.

BTW, was it just me, or did that 99 NA2 in the video have a first gen smaller front lip?

I guess I will have to re-dyno it and check for reliability of the measurement. I did it at Autowave in Huntington Beach (rollers in the ground-not sure what that kind is called). Their dyno could be optimistic, since they build NSX’s.
What's another dyno shop that you all recommend in the LA area?
If the second dyno produces similar results, I will adopt the theory of the car getting extra TLC when built at the factory.
I am not into the actual HP number in itself- I have been in more powerful cars (I owned a Jim Wolf (himself) Stage 3.5 1992 300ZX with less than 30K original miles on it, rated at 416hp+). I am just impressed with the apparent efficiency of the car.
 
One dyno my car was on "measured" 408 hp at the wheels and another "measured" 270. With the car in the exact same state of tune. Neither of those dynos were calibrated. There's one dyno close to where I live that's used by the government and is regularly calibrated. Unfortunately, each pull there costs several hundred euros. But if the dyno hasn't been recently calibrated, the figures it spits out are basically worthless as an indication of how many horsepower your car really has.

I don't know how much variation there really is between stock NSXs. I was thinking one way cheap way to find out how much power an NSX really has is by dynoing two NSXs on a regular dyno. A stock one and yours. Regardless what absolute figures the dyno comes up with, calculate the percentage difference in rwhp between the two, assume a stock NA1 really puts 235 hp to the wheels and an NA2 250 (as per the FAQ section of NSX Prime), and calculate from there.

Another good way to find out your car's true horsepower is probably to is to measure your car's weight and 1/4 mile trap speed and calculate the rwhp from that.

Or, of course, you could find a dyno that's actually been calibrated recently. But those seem to be few and far between.

The shop I went to is one of the best in So Cal and is recommended by nsxprime among others. I see the point of measurement, though, and so maybe dynoing at another reputable shop would be good.
I am do not think the 1/4 mile trap speed test is valid, given several confoudning varaibles that may influence teh results.
