Please leave out oil tycoons, weapon manufactures, the treasury, plain old fashion hard work, etc ... all the obvious ones.

Im curious if there is anyone that has found a way to make money even today in these times.

If you could figure out a way to put Geithner on TV once a day for 2 weeks, based off his last performance you could make loads shorting.........well anything

Companies that clean the junk out of homes that were foreclosed on.

The ones in Miami are hiring like crazy. People get kicked out and typically move into a (much) smaller apartment or something so they leave a bunch of stuff behind. These companies are hired to come in and move the stuff to the curb. The families (and anyone else) gets 24 hours to pick thru before its hauled away as trash.

You don't need skilled labor. Just guys that work quick so you can move on to the next place. There are thousands of places that need to be cleaned out.

Yep, but it's much better to lock the stuff up for a short period of time and send out the legal notices to the last known address of the mortgage holder. After they don't come to pick the stuff up then you throw the trash away in a dumpster and haul the good stuff to a huge barn and store it for a big massive yard sale.

i know a number of people who are prospering: software engineers, software company owners (and their employees), software / hardware salespeople, pet product / store owners, experienced, "specialist"/niche market consultants, residential & commercial security service installers, etc.

clearly, the days of free money (for most) are gone, at least until the next bubble, but my take is that there are many people who are not only holding their own, but doing well... though more effort required to achieve results that are not quite as great as during the free money days.

I own a cellphone repair shop, just purchased 2003 NSX-T last December:cool:

You should've played Poker. Would've gotten your NSX sooner.

As for the title of this thread. So far I'm having a very strong year. People will always need healthcare.

Manufacturing weapons must be really lucrative. I was in Neiman Marcus recently. While I was chatting w/ the salesperson, I noticed a $10,000 jacket......I pointed out to the salesperson that it was the most expensive clothing tem I had ever seen...He told me that the store had just ordered a $100,000 jacket  for a customer. I asked what kind of person has that kind of cash for a jacket and was told that it was a guy who owns a gun factory.

I havent really been affected, we concentrate on pre-owned cars and sports cars and we havent missed a beat. People know that the high-line sports cars and sport compact cars are thousands below what they were worth and there is always people with money, or think they can handle the purchase. Our chargebacks due to repo's has been through the roof. Our volume is up and grosses are just slightly lower than normal. We're having trouble finding enough cars. The only issue is credit is harder than ever, and approvals are slightly harder to get. Last year we repo'd 25 cars, this year...YTD we are nearing 50 or so:frown:

Can someone explain to me why everytime I drive by the local mall, the parking lot is packed full of cars? It's obvious to me that consumer spending at the mall has not been affected by the slow economy.

Cell phone industry is another prospering market- People are so dependent these days on cell phones that they will make sacrifices just to keep them.

Short financials. People said that trade was dead 12 months ago. Still 100% to zero (for the ones that are left).

I have been playing the preferred shares (mostly short) associated with all these banks and making some $$. Don't know if that counts. If you can short Obama's popularity that'll be profitable as well probably.

+1.

I've been breaking records left and right the past 3 months. I'm not sure how long it will continue, but I'm happy for now.

I have avoided expanding however just in case.

My business has been unaffected by the economy.

I never think about what other people or the media says about the economy or the business environment be it good or bad. I never worry about the competition.

I relentlessly keep my eye on what my business is doing putting in extra time and effort to keep it moving and growing.
I maintain a positive attitude, the greatest gift my father ever gave me.

This probably sounds flaky to some but deep down I always expect things to improve and believe that if I have faith in God and a firm belief in His love, that He will inspire me and help me find my way.

We currently are booking 7 weeks in advance.

I am happy to hear that some of you are doing well. Real Estate has been picking up for me in the pas few months. Let's hope it will be this way untill summer.

I'm in the electrical generation (nuclear power plant) business. So far, gas/electric utilities have still been doing well. While we still got a bonus and our revenue/profits have been normal, our raises have been deferred "because it would send the wrong message to our customers as we're trying to build two new nuclear plants worth about $10 billion." That's OK with me as I'm fortunate to still have a job and I do feel sorry for others out there.

If you are an engineer in the power industry and willing to travel overseas, there are very nice incentives. My family and I just recently contemplated on whether or not to go to Shanghai for a few years but decided not to because of our two small children. Plus, the stress just isn't worth it. The nuclear company would have paid for a luxury apartment, personal interprator, personal chaffeur, private schooling for your children, and up to four 1st class round trip tickets back to the states per year. That's not counting the (mostly) tax-free income, premium pay, etc. Shanghai is a nice city too

Well you got me curious, what exactly do you do.

BTW all that free stuff in Shanghai would cost about 15 dollars American :D. My buddy lives in Thailand and has a driver that cost him 2 bucks a day or some ridiculously low amount like that.

More people getting sick due to stress healthcare is booming as is Pharmacy. Intoxicant companies alcohol are making a killing as depressing kicks in.lol As you hit rock bottem you start giving charity to Religous affiliations. Gold is up to $970 an ounce.
If your in the market for million dollar home you will save-make $300k since the housing market deflated.

Think positive look at the bright side:biggrin: and broaden your portfolio.
