I have been driving for over 25 years... I would think I should have noticed the little secret on my dashboard that was staring me in the face the whole time...I didn't...
and I bet you didn't either...

Have you ever rented or borrowed a car and when arriving at the gas station wondered...

mmm, which side is the gas filler cap?

My normal solution was to stick my head out the window, strain my neck and look, try to see in the side mirrors or even get out of the car!

Well ladies and gentlemen, I'm going to share with you my little secret so you will no longer look like Ace Ventura on your way to the gas station or put your neck at risk
of discomfort or injury.

If you look at your gas gauge, you will see a small icon of a gas pump?
The handle of the gas pump will extend out on either the left or right
side of the gas pump?

If your tank is on the left, the handle will be on the left?
If your tank is on the right, the handle will be on the right (see photo attached).
It is that simple!

Don't feel dumb, just go out and share the world's best kept auto secret with your friends.

Wow, very cool... I'll admit I did not know that.

Some cars have a little arrow printed on there... but my usual trick in a rental car, borrowed car, etc, is to pop the fuel door as I'm pulling up... you can see the open door out of the sideview mirror.

Damn, if only this was true. I was really hoping it was. 1999 Subaru Impreza RS

Doesnt your pic confirm this theory. I cant tell too well but it looks like the pump handle is on the right in the top pic and clearly your tank is on the right.

I never thought about that.

However, my trick is to pull the gas filler release and look in the side mirror to checks which side it is located at...however, this won't work for the vintage that requires manual locking from the outside....

Heh, I remember the days of the Series II and III XJ6, we'd get customers complaining that they had a bad fuel leak in the right front of the car. That's a Series I XJ, but they had the same gremlin....

They had 3 electronic fuel switchover valves to toggle the two tanks. The return line valve would stick, and all the fuel would pump from one tank to the other. When the tank was full to the top from fuel from the other tank, it would continue to pump until it came through the vapor lines, filled the vapor canister, and started pumping out the top of the vapor canister.

Ahhh Lucas.....good times, good times

Alas, this is not true.

I've found that most cars have an arrow pointing to which side the filler cap is on. If the car doesn't have an arrow you can always use Derelict's tip.

My SUV has the arrow pointing to the passenger side. But because both the Fit and the NSX have the tank on the drivers side and those are the cars I usually drive, I still pull up on the wrong side from time to time in the SUV.:tongue:

This thread has me recalling the scene from National Lampoons Vacation where Clark rips the license plate off the Truckster while searching for the fuel filler door...

I rent a car weekly. I have yet to get one that doesn't have an arrow on the gauge showing which side the cap is on.

I had a car once (Nissan Xterra I think) where I couldn't figure out how to open the gas cover. Looked everywhere for a release trigger. Tried pressing the cover to see if it pops out (ala GM's). Ended up returning it empty. The attendant showed me how to open it. You push the hinge side of the cover, causing the other side to lift open. duh. Ended up paying somewhere around $6/gal.

I've always laughed at my wife's Navigator instrument panel that shows which side the gas filler is on. Is this in case the owner forgets between fill ups??? This pic. contradicts your theory too.

Absolutely no offense to you and please take this in the spirit in which it is intended. But THAT'S the interior of a Navigator???? Blahhhh, no wonder the big 3 are in trouble.

No offense taken. But it's one of the reasons we just got this to replace it::biggrin::biggrin:

LOL, I can't believe there's an actual arrow pointing to the fuel door. And why is that RESET button so darn huge?

They always put the arrow in rental type cars. Its actually a nice feature on a rental car since you always have to fill it up before returning it and your never sure where the tank is until you look.

What? Your gas tank isn't on the right side of your NSX?

I dont know what u guys are talking about???
My 2004 NSX Gas gauge is correct and is pointing to the correct side
