The PERFECT NSX Dash setup, who's got it?

Since I started this thread many moons ago, I still have not worked on my own personal NSX. Just too many projects for others but I have to add a few things here.

a) Stevenlee: I love your dash setup - at first I was going to say it looks a bit busy but I do like how you maintained a single DIN unit that can flip out. I know this technology is old but at least you don't have the glare issue and we don't always need a monitor while driving. The gauge placement and your iPhone compartment shows some real though. If someone who is not familiar they would not be able to sell it was re-sized larger! Great job!

b) This dash is really nice - of course you still have the major glare issue but look wise at least when it's not being used looks good probably just because the entire interior is so well color matched.

c) We've worked on a few NSX's since my initial post and of course we're a bit biased since we did the work but I truly think this is the only double din install that I've seen that addresses the glare issue. Kenwood decks have a unique feature to "reverse" tilt" so when engaged it really eliminates the main problem. The concept can be applied to any double DIN install really but not all decks have this feature.

*P.S. I'm currently working on a setup for my own NSX that will use a tablet PC as the display but sadly it won't be the iPad since it's simply too large. We still plan to use a DIN sized deck for the main audio controls but working on placement options right now

Notice how the deck tilts inward and virtually eliminates all glare issues when powered up:

here it sits a bit more flush when turned off:

Finished deck from driver's viewpoint:

this is where we mounted the V1 main unit (display is housed in the dash)

In the quest for the perfect dash setup i've been considering a tablet as well. Can you guys help me figure out which one is the best tablet to use?

1. Is capable of accessing Pandora, Google Maps, Yelp, email, etc
2. Has a USB capable of reading from a USB-Serial cable
3. Can run Windows based software to access an Engine Management System

Any help would be much appreciated guys!

What console is this? And how does it have any room to tilt like that? Whats the mechanism that does this? Very interested in this. My AVIC is becoming out dated.......

Thanks for the compliments.

Here's how I mounted my Valentine 1 plus some other goodies that didn't fit in my center console. I made it out of acrylic sheet that I glued together and shaped and painted to match the center console.

I mounted the Valentine 1 here because it is invisible to anyone who is outside of the car unless they bend down and look up at the ceiling. (Never happens) The V1 senses signals from the front and the rear.

This ceiling pod houses:
Valentine 1,
Bluetooth microphone,
Microphone Mute button,
Shifter,
Garage door opener,
Parking sensor activation button (creates a magnetic field in front of the vehicle for 12 seconds to assist in parking close to curbs without hitting)
Auxiliary Button- (Top Secret)

This ceiling pod, like the center console, took me well more than 100 hours to design and build. The 4 buttons are back lit to match the red color of the center console illumination and probably took me 20 hours just to make the 4 buttons including: shaping, engrave the words, filling with opaque white epoxy and illuminating them to the correct OEM color and brightness.

Here are photos of iPhone tray closed and opened to show the coin tray and AEM serial gauge. The serial gauge allows me to monitor numerous (17?) functions such as AIT, Water temp, Dual wide band O2 sensors, etc. The "look" of the AEM serial gauge didn't match my analog Defi gauges so I hid it under the iPhone tray. I added a toggle switch on the Serial gauge so I can turn On or Off a piezo buzzer that I installed to warn of any of the parameters that are out of the safe ranges that I set.
I made the hinged tray out of stainless sheet and painted it on the back and flocked it on the front to match the OEM look and prevent any objects in it from rattling.

This car took the "Best In Show" award at the 2011 NSXPO because of my many mods including the ones shown here.

^Steven, your car looks impressive for sure inside but how does the outside look?

I'm also a very tech guy and really do appreciate your interior touches, all are well thought out and executed well. I see way too many cars that have crazy body kits or performance but nothing on the inside.

Always been a firm believer of a "total package" car :) This is the philosophy I'm using in building my latest s2000 but have left my NSX preserved for now.

EVERYTHING on this is custom work - you can't build just one piece and have it all fit correctly. The brackets for the radio were specifically made combined with the angle of the mount were all factors. The entire dash piece is custom too. Only Kenwood decks have the unique "reverse tilt" feature. No other brand I'm aware of does this right now so you would need to go Kenwood if you want this to work.

In this client's case, he opted to lose the ashtray so we had more space to do the V1 mount and switches.

We would need your NSX for roughly a week to complete this job, PM me to discuss further.

My car has very subtle mods on the outside.
The most noticeable mod is the wheels. They are Volk CE28N's that I reshaped (over 40 hours of hand shaping) and refinished with Permastar imitation power coated chrome (lighter weight, better looking and last longer than plated chrome).

I tried to keep it as OEM looking as possible, I added a usb port & the EDFC where the cig lighter & ash tray were.

very nicely done, i see you built in a slight tilt! I was thinking to use the same headunit... was it difficult to make the ashtray door usable?

BTW what paint did you use to paint the console? pretty good match

Thanks, it was pretty easy to get the ashtray door usable. I slid the door across the concrete floor in the garage to make it a little thinner, then sanded the top part of the door down. You also have to sand the top part of the black part that the door is screwed to.

The spray paint I used:
http://www.homedepot.com/Blacks/Pai...splay?catalogId=10053&langId=-1&storeId=10051

Make sure you shake well and give it a few light coats. Don't spray too much too close because it will end up looking shiny/crappy. In that picture the door looks to have more gloss than the rest, so i had to lightly sand it and give it one more light coat.

This is also my favorite set up and I would love to add this to my 1995 brooklands green/tan interior car which I just purchased. I've seen the bezel/pod on ebay for something like $280. What's ipod/screen/monitor in the pod?
Thanks,
Ben

here are some BEFORE photos, we are building a custom NSX CF dash panel along with matching steering wheel for this car:

Wanted to update, those were the BEFORE pics, here are the AFTER with the custom modified and finished OEM dash panel in carbon fiber. We deleted the ashtray and added a illuminated START button along with a new Alpine ILX-207 radio. Customer also opted for our matching CF door trims and steering wheel to give the interior a complete facelift:

For those who wish to retain the stock OEM look but give the interior a facelift along with better sound, this may be the best option out there!

Parts used:

EuroBoutique CF OEM dash panel replacement
EuroBoutqiue CF power window door trims and matching center vent
Wilmans radio upgrade with modern Kenwood internals
Upgraded speakers and subwoofer

Mine's not perfect because I'd much rather have some of the other setups out there but, I'm happy with this for now.

That looks great, I would love to see with the gadgets on. Interested in how your controls work

Climate controls are behind the ash tray.

I'll see when I get a chance to get in the car and take a pic with everything on. Basically, just my music showing on random. It's an Android so has all the apps and navi (off line) available. Didn't hook up the back up camera to it because the system takes a bit to start up and sometimes I just want to start and go so cameras are hooked up in the rear view mirror with front and rear recorders.
