How the heck do you use torrents???

Ugh, I am too oldschool. I like my GUIs. I miss the days of using Napster.

Can someone tell me how the heck I use torrents to DL stuff off the web? Is there a nice user-friendly (ie. non computer degree level) way to do this? I'm tired to paying iTunes!

I use Bitlord, its really easy to use. And like said above after installing just hit download torrent on what ever you download and make sure the files and everything are in the folder.

A initially used Azureaus/Vuze, and have since switched over to uTorrent. I noticed Vuze was much more of a memory hog, and haven't been having that problem with uTorrent.

When installing it, I had no idea what settings to use, but the setup wizard figured things out pretty good and things have worked pretty smoothly for me since.

Utorrent rocks, I've tried the rest, this is the best. Use thepiratebay or mininova.org to find what you want. Manage your torrents, remove the ones you don't want to seed. The more you have in your list, the more your system is bogged down trying to download stuff.

mininova.org or btmon.com
Install the torrent program and click away

On mininova, I always read comments for feedbacks
before downloading the files. Cheers!

1. download and install utorrent
2. make sure utorrent is on
3. go to thepiratebay.org and find what you're looking for
4. click on the link and it should do everything by itself

Tips: before you download something read the comments people write. If it says "virus, spyware, etc" obviously stay away from it and find one that people agree that its good.

If you get stuck sometimes you'll need to unpack it with a program like winRAR. Google winRAR and download it. Open the stuck file with you're newly downloaded winRAR and things should work.

And if you get all the way to the file but can't watch/listen to it download my favorite media player out there that will play literally everything you throw at it: VLC media player.

Hope this helps.

There are also Russian I-Tunes equilivants that cost 1/10th as much and are, from many peoples understanding, legal.

FYI:

- If you use a router make sure you synchronize (forward) the ports you use for your torrents. See www.portforward.com for info.

- most ISPs frown on your downloading of copyrighted material. They come down hardest on network TV shows and recently released films. ISP's can't see you downloading but they can see you uploading (seeding). That's where they get you. I try not to leave a finished torrent in the seeding area after I've finished downloading it. This will hurt your "share ratio" but on many free torrent sites where TV and films are shared ratio doesn't matter.

- I've found that limiting upload/download speed hurts overall speeds for both. I keep both speeds set to unlimited.

- mininova.com is a great site as is thepiratebay.org. For adult stuff check out empornium.us

My question is what are you trying to download.
If its music, then there are a few good programs out there.
I have Emule or Edonkey running all the time at home and at work.
I download videos and some music with it and some small programs.
Lots of people up here us Limewire for music and I have seen this stuff comes down fast, real fast.
My lady friend with big boobs and blonde hair can use this program.
So can you......
If you looking for quality and a nice selection and are willing to pay a little, then get a subscribtion to Easynews.
I have had mine since Mon Nov 01 16:36:59 MST 2004 (4.03546042 years).
I have downloaded: You have downloaded a total of 971.01 gigabytes.
It only cost 10 us bucks a month.
Easynew scrapes all the news groups and categorizes them.
So you have tons of categories to go through and its updated all the time throughout the day.
I just download an R5 of Max Payne and burnt it to watch tonite.
I download Survivor at work and watch it.
I download rock music and listen to it.
I download pics and porn and everything else here.
Its all here.
You are allowed 20 gig each month at that rate.
Its fast as well, 300-400 k/sec
Check it out.

Did you get your race yet?
If not let me know exactly what you want and I'll give you a link and my password.

+1

I use Limewire for music, particularly if it's just individual songs you're looking for it's very efficient and fast.

And the newsgroups are really great with no risk of ISP crackdown since those sites are totally private and offer direct downloads of fully uploaded files hosted by the newsgroups. The download speeds are only limited by your bandwidth, not the amount of seeders or leechers since there are none. The newsgroups are, however, subscription services.

Right on,,,,,,remember 10 bucks for 20 gig, how can you beat that. I download the shit out of this thing and have 100 gig right now on backlog.
Cool thing is I phone the 1-800 number and expect to get no one and a person answers and talks to me, unreal, that is worth 10 bucks!!! lol

Nice to see you get something for your money.

Newsgroups are defintely the way to go if you're willing to spend a few bucks.

I read A LOT of ISP's were banning Newsgroups. I think comcast just said something about it.

Easynews is a web based site or http:
So what Im saying is that your downloading not from newgroups yourself.
Everything is collected and posted on their site.
For movies you even get them unrar'd and a little picture of a few scenes to see the quality, you know if the movie is a cam, TS, screener or dvd rip.

That's ridiculous. Trying to stop something that can't be stopped. When are they going to learn?

Comcast in particular is really just caving on everything from bandwidth to torrents and now apparently newsgroups.

I would absolutely patronize another ISP if mine ever tried to pull what Comcast pulls.

How exactly can an ISP ban a newsgroup? Wouldn't they have to ban the whole site outright? I'm interested to know how they can do this.

I used this one: http://www.newsbin.com/

I read the comcast thing right on the front page I think.

I got a 3-day unlimited download for like 3 bucks. Well worth it.

Here are some screen caps from Easynews.
You think I work for them or something!!! lol

I know, everyone who I know that uses them raves about them. Best money they ever spent they tell me. I'm patient and cheap so I don't mind the wait for free but it's really not that much and it's incredibly more efficient with no risk of viruses or ISP BS. Best thing since sliced bread. Looks like you've been rocking it since 01. Wow. You're almost a pioneer.

Or, sign up for www.usenet.net. This is what I did. $13.99/mo unlimited downloads. Speeds for me are at 800KB/s consistent. I use newsleecher, which I think is the best newsgroup reader/downloader.

Comca$t sucks sooo bad I don't even want to get into it. They have capped us at 250gb TOTAL bandwidth per month, which I hardly ever use, but they are just trying to control more and more of what we can and can't do. And yes, the nuked newsgroup access. All we had was 5gb per month anyways.

This thread is amusing. Makes me feel 'old' and I'm still in my twenties.

I'll leave out any discussion of the ethical or legal issues.

Napster is not old school. Neither are GUI's. Napster's ease of use is what brought piracy to the mainstream and caused the content owners to start fighting back.

BBS, FTP, and uuencoded Usenet (aka binary newsgroups) are the old ways, but those methods have been around since the 80's - 2001 is hardly pioneering :)

Have fun guys!
