1994 NSX cleaning - restoration at 182,546 miles (*This is what crazy looks like.*)

I would suggest you think about a side business - NSX restoration to factory new. Based on what you've done to your car I'm sure many NSX owner will track you down

Why not powder coat the parts (that can be powder coated) to whatever color you desire instead of cleaning them? It's always a better finish than paint.

Because powder coating takes away from the factory beauty of the shiny aluminum. :)

I would do it, but I doubt many people would want to pay what it takes to make it happen.

Well, I had an interesting turn of events. I sent off the front and rear bumper support beams (the large black things) to get stripped down and repainted, and the body shop called me and said there was rust on the rear beam that when they started working on it parts of the beam just crumbled! YIKES! So now I have to get a new one of those, or find a mint condition used one. :(

STMPO makes an aluminum one. It isn't steel like OEM but then aluminum just seems to make sense (in a metaphorical kind of way).

I used this: http://www.simplegreen.com/products_extreme_motor.php
Spray, let it sit for a few mins then scrub a little w/ a brush and rinse off.

I dunno if I would use it, that stuff appears to have dissolved your rotor and caliper......

Seriously, Simple Green is great stuff. It is not corrosive and is biodegradable. For both those reasons, I use it all the time to clean the wheels on my vehicles. I would never use any wheel cleaner which comes with a big "corrosive" warning - just imagine the long term effects on the paint / clear coat / aluminum.

Hey Meeyatch any updates?
This project seems completely appropriate to me. A while back I got into a fender bender with an old Ford pickup. By the time I finished “fixing” the fender it became a complete frame off restoration. 18 months later the only original parts were the cab and hood.
Keep up the good work.

It all escalates so quickly...LOL! :D

UPDATES:

1.) I was at the body shop on Friday to check on the front and rear bumper beams that I am having sand blasted and repainted and the front one should be done this coming week, and the rear one had some serious corrosion on it. So right now I am waiting to hear back from (2) separate NSX Prime guys on rear beams they have that are supposed to be in exceptionally good shape so that I know if I am buying a replacement from them, or having mine repaired.

2.) I have a shipment of literally HUNDREDS of Honda/Acura OEM bolts, nuts, and washers, that are arriving this week so that I can start replacing those.

3.) With any luck, I will have a new rear quarter panel and rear bumper to replace the ones on my car currently that have a few paint flaws in them. Why all new body panels, you say? Because I am a nut case, and the body panels I am trying to obtain are sill in the original FACTORY Grand Prix White paint, and NOT repainted. So the match with be almost perfect. Yes...I know...borderline stupid, but I don't care. It is my car. :)

4.) The Christmas and New Years holiday slowed me down as I was in Canada for almost 2 weeks and not here to tinker with the car, and also was too busy running around all over Canada visiting family and such that I could not even work on my 'need to get list' for other parts.

I am leaving in about 30 minutes for Detroit and the press day for the Detroit Auto Show (NAIAS) tomorrow and Tuesday, so the soonest I will be able to play with the car anymore will be next weekend probably. My goal is to have the passenger side, rear section, and front section, all done by the end of January. That would leave me the driver's side, interior, and undercarriage to to in February, and have the car back on the road by March.

I still need to get a passenger side rocker panel in Grand Prix White if anyone knows where I can find one. My current one is cracked. :(

Okay...so this past weekend I purchased a replacement quarter panel that was still in the ORIGINAL paint to replace my current panel where the color always seemed just a hit off depending on how you looked at it. Nobody else can tell the difference, but I can. Maybe it is just mental. Either way, it bothered me enough that I had to replace it. :)

Also, I purchased a pair of side vents in the original factory paint to replace my chipped ones. Finally, I also bought a full set of replacement marker lights for all (4) corners to replace the dirty and old ones.

So once the remaining order of bolts, nuts, and other stuff gets here, I should be ready to start re-assembly. More pictures will be posted tomorrow. :)

Your such a busy nsxer, from Detroit show(thanks for that btw) to your own project. Foru is great cause of people like you.

Back into the project! :)

I just ordered over $380 worth of OEM nuts, bolts, grommets, and such from Ryan at Acura of Augusta, and the project continues. The more I take the car apart, the more I want to replace. Oh.....O.C.D., what have you done to me?

While you have the car up in the air and torn apart, may I suggest you remove those rusty old iron manifolds and replace with a set of NA2 exhaust manifolds?

That alone should net you 10hp 10ftlb.

This is turning into a very sensuous project … as in, sensuous at it, replace the bumper beam; sensuous at it, get new manifolds ….

Seriously, I need to do something like this, too. Great work!

those I do have... btw - my bumper bears are steel - jdm or the alumonum na 2 or "newer version"

I dont think you ever replyed to that

Nice work again man

Yep. You said that at the time the steel OEM you had was for a European spec car and would not fit my car, and I did not want the aluminum because I am trying to retore my car to be correct for as it came from Tochigi in 1994.

Now....if you have an OEM steel beam that is identical to what was on my car, I would most definitely like to scoop it up so that I can finish putting my car back together. :)

Ummm.....absolutely is. This all started as a light bulb replacement project. Seriously. :D

More pics of progress!! This is exciting to watch.

Ask and you shall receive... :)

Here are some updates from the last week. I received my first shipment of OEM replacement bolts, brackets, connectors, and other odds and ends. Many of these pieces are stacked on top of each other by part number, so the pictures do not do justice to how many parts are actually here.

Also included are pictures of the new OEM quarter panel that I purchased solely because it was in *original* factory paint and matched better than the repainted quarter that I had on the car. It is a difference that you can only see in certain light and angles, but it drove me nuts. I had other people look at it, and NOBODY could tell the difference between the old quarter panel and the new one. Oh well...I could. :)

In the pictures of the marker lights you will see why I bought (4) new ones. These are the parts that started the whole project. When I went to change that now infamous light bulb, I noticed that some goofball drilled holes into the assemblies and put little strobe lights in there. Ummmm, no. That had to be fixed immediately.

You will also see the newly media blasted and repainted OEM steel front bumper beam. All nice, fresh, and new looking.

I have another shipment of OEM goodies coming in from Ryan at Acura of Augusta this week, and will be ordering more next week. So the work continues. With the weather finally getting warmer here so that I can work with the garage door open, and wash and polish parts outside, the progress should speed up considerably from here on out. But I am not going to rush getting it perfect.
