Oil leak in the gulf

That lucky surviver on the 60-Minutes piece is going to nail BP with what he is saying (that BP took control after a dispute, making up for lost time and rolling the dice on suspect equipment that they new was failing).

It's a must see for anyone who still thinks that it was just an honest accident like one Prime members post comparing it to the Titanic, The Space Shuttle and every plane ever made!
I'm still crackin up over that statement!

The 60 minutes piece was compelling.

If an "accident" like this should happen on the rig Atlantis, it would make this spill look like a cup of coffee got loose. They cannot be trusted anymore!

Sickining, scary, upsetting and pissed. I thought how cowardice that both life boats cut out with people still on board. Pure luck that boat was there to pluck the surviver out of the slime to tell all! More shocking details to follow I'm sure!

Well now we have the benefit of "now we know" instead of random guesses based upon assumption. Don't be hard on someone for doing the same thing you did, assume based upon whatever we know or influenced us in the past.

I still believe it was an accident in regards to the lives lost. Im sure the parties that are being blamed did intentionally desire, to cause the rig to explode and have a well flowing on the bottom of the sea floor. Again im not a BP or Transocean fanboy. I agree with the statements of being a little to relaxed in some of the decision making. I see just as much chest beating on the rig floor as i see in the rest of the world today. Everybody has a story and wants to be right. Im here with a few people that actually worked with the guy from 60 minutes. Im not saying his story is right or wrong, its just his story and a truely eye opening one. I do not own any BP or Transocean stock, do any of you?

I don't recall assuming anything, only talking about things that have been reported. I've thrown out a lot of questions and KO has been kind enough to keep us updated on some of the inside action info.
I don't see much interest here in one of the most important and game changing events that could affect us all at some point! There is more action over on the Gum thread!

Probably because most people are trying to avoid a WMD type of discussion. So most people are probably just waiting for the facts to unfold before coming to any conclusions and getting chastised about it.

Perhaps Prime isn't all that different than the general population.

Isn't 60 minutes on Sunday nights? are we talking about the TV program? was it last week and I missed it? how did you guys see it?

Here's the 60 Minutes segment. If you're interested reading and commenting on this subject (if you haven't seen it), you should take a few minutes and watch it.
Like mentioned, Very compelling stuff!

Before we start pointing fingers, placing blame and passing judgment, its important to remember the underlying cause of this situation...

Consumer demand for cheap oil.

Not that we should feel liable for making rash, questionable and probably immoral decisions as BP execs may have done-

But as consumers, we want what we want and we want it cheap and we want it now so we can drive our NSX's up and down the coastline whenever we please.

I'm not advocating everyone go out and buy a Tesla. But personally, before I start labelling others greedy profiteers, I would probably throw away the keys to the gasoline powered, high performance sports car in my garage. And i'm not willing to do that. Are you?

Just something to think about.

I was looking at those pictures. What a tragedy.

i think the point here is not that the entire world runs on oil but the carelessness that always seems to eminate from 'big business' where nobody ever is liable 'thanks' to corporate law.
at a risk of repeating myself- this was all preventable and the signs were ignored and covered-up- proven facts and no assumptions.

I don't know if it was mentioned here yet or not but there was some sort of safety design that was mandatory years back that was lobbied against by the oil companies as it added half a million dollars in cost to implement. During the Bush years, it was repealed and the oil companies were given a lot more leeway to "self monitor" which seems to be a pretty interesting and often used tactic nowadays. Half a million is probably what BP makes in a minute.

I know I am going to sound real lefty here, but to me the biggest danger to Capitalism itself is this lack of oversight and control. While a capitalistic system has great benefits in that in tends to eliminate some amount of waste (although not nearly as much as corporations want to have you believe), it is essentially also a system where money is king, and greed matters the most. A lack of oversight to reign in big business leads to things like lobbying against safety regulations with oil drilling as well as banking.

I'm not a "socialist", I believe in capitalism but without control it is a run away freight train. Eventually, it will just destroy itself. Now we just had the supreme court open the door to endless spending for corporations on helping elect the officials they want to see in power. That means even foreign corporations. This was a HUGE event and it went almost wholy unnoticed.

To get back on track, clearly "drill baby drill" is a stupid slogan without some serious changes in the way we do things. That includes silverstone05's suggestion that some amount of responisbility also lies with the end user.

Ko those are awesome pictures!

yes, someone did point it out on the safety measures that were lobbied-out.
fyi- i agree with the common sense, nothing 'leftist' here.

I think we all need to keep our fingers crossed for tomorrows attempt to stop this nightmare and that they don't make it worse.

Experts say uncapped, it will spew for decades.

Obama's at a democratic fund raiser tonight in SF. (Talkin like John Wayne, actin like PeeWee Herman)

MMS inspectors on the take from the oil companies that they're inspecting.

A lot of scary stuff under the surface. ( and no living things to be seen)

What ever happened to the Greatest Country in the world? Over run with illegals and their supporters, a foreign co. calling the shots on our environment and our pitiful government with no sense of urgency or a clue to what's happening to it's own people and their home!

Top Kill, please work.

The beauty of capitalism is that, in the pursuit of economic gain, corporations *have* to promote the wishes of the consumer, and the common good for all or their business model will eventually become an economic failure.

I've watched my BP position disentegrate as their market cap collapses. I'm small potatoes, but I can only imagine what a 30% drop in net worth would do to one of their high level executives. Furthermore, due to the cleanup and other costly side effects, their bills are rising rapidly while their reputation is languishing rapidly. BP will take years to recover from this disaster. And probably rightfully so.

Greed is good.

I tend to think that their greed will have them thinking twice before letting something like this happen again.

Greed is good.

Thank you, Gordon. I agree.

Greed is good.
Green is good.

I wish that there were more organizations that would/could reconcile those two ideas. And yes, a Tesla is in my future.

I am hoping/praying that today's events in the Gulf will work to contain, if not stop, the hemorrhaging of crude. I also pray that the families that were broken by the events on 20 April find peace soon.
